The Methow! that place sucks. Its ugly and prone to horrible natural disasters like flooding, forest fires, and tornadoes. Not to mention, viscious bears and killer dinosaurs. Don't got there. Especially if you're from california or boulder.

The one thing about Alaska is there's lots of bugs and you can't go swimming in the rivers in the summer. And the weather sucks alot.

Getting TO the climb / ski is often the hardest part about the whole endeveor.

Now that WA Pass is open, another alternative would be to go that way via Arlington-Darrington-Marblemount then stay on 20 over Loup Loup Pass into Okanogan, then north on 97 to Penticton. I'm not sure if that would be faster, but really the only viable alternative route, as going north to Vancouver and over would definitly not be faster.

Fancy modern mountaineering boots don't need to be broken in. I'd go hike in them a few miles on some up and down terrain to see if they give you blisters, hotspots, or other pains. If not, you're good to go.
