  1. Oops. I guess that means I can turn it on. I meant I'm in the top 99.99 percentile when it comes to calculator use. It appears that I'm in the top 0.001 percentile when it comes to using the term "percentile."
  2. I won't. I'm in the top 0.001 percentile when it comes to calculator use. I think that's good... isn't it?
  3. Hmm... sum total, eh? I guess I'm going to have to get out my calculator and start cranking out a weighted average. Oh Gaaaaarrrrrryyyyyy....
  4. Do you mean our "primary" online persona? Or our secondary? Or even tertiary? Or in Dru's case - our brazilinth?
  5. I was wonderin' that myself! I was going to look through my photos tonight for things like "Best Scenery taken between 5am and 6am" and "Best Climbing taken when balanced with one foot" and "Best Alpine Climbing taken when my harness is pinching a nut" and ... But I do have to say that your Stuart shot is pretty cool!
  6. Drinking right from the spigot on the box again?
  7. LOL! KILLIN' FOR JESUS, BRING IT ON, BITCH YO... people. Read the freakin article and brush up on reading comprehension before you start going off half-horsecocked. Rev. Edgar is saying that he's more concerned about Bush's attitude toward the war than he is whether he says "Merry Christmas." Edgar is a CRITIC... do you hear me... a CRITIC of the Iraq war and the way it is being waged. http://www.ncccusa.org/iraq/conscience.html It's his way of asking "what would Jesus do?" and he doesn't think the answer is "nuke them." I don't either. Before you go off patting yourself on your back that your morals are far superior to those "religious conservatives", you'd better find out what the *&%^ you're talking about. Oh... and by the way - nice editing out archie of the fact that Edgar is a former Democratic congressman!

  10. Sheesh Gary... if you don't want to hear people's opinions, don't ask. You already said it earlier: art has no rules. But folks' definition of art varies. In your original post where you threw out some specific instances, you are specifically talking about putting something in, or taking it out of the picture. The idea of having two shots of birds flying and wanting the one "in the middle" that you didn't take means you have to do some bird drawing. The finished product entails you making some assumptions of where wings were, where heads were, etc. Is it art? Sure thing. Is it good photography? Hmmmmmmm.
  11. Very well put. Timing, timing, timing. Regarding Chris' comment about merging panoramas, my take on it is, for what it's worth, is that's an OK use of digital manipulation. As long as you don't alter what was there, or stretch/resize the shot so that your merge lines merge better. It's nothing you can't do with a straight edge and a sharp exacto in real life, so what's the difference? -kurt
  12. Can I nominate this for "Best Dave_Schuldt typo"? It's not particularly funny, but it just makes me snicker for some odd reason. And why the hell are we waiting until spring?
  13. Grand Park in moonlight. Long exposure at late dusk. July 1994.
  14. Scenic... or senic - depending on your upbringing: Full size here Upper Park Lakes, Hibox and Alta in background. Sept 1994 or thereabouts. -kurt
  15. Wife took this one - June 2003 on the Emmons. Person in the litter did a good tweak on the ankle/leg and eventually got a ride out via Airlift NW from Glacier Basin.
  16. "Climbing" category... Anonymous group descending the Emmons Glacier, Sat June 19 2004. Perhaps it was you! Full size version here

    Voice-Over-IP

Prices I noted don't include taxes. But the tax on it is minimal, if I remember correctly. You aren't being taxed up the kazoo on the DSL portion because it doesn't have all the Federal/Local/State/County/Street/Snaffle surcharges imposed like phone access.

The cheapest DSL option you can get is not really advertised by Quest. With absolutely no "qualifying phone packages", you can get DSL from Quest at $24.99 a month. This does NOT include an email address - just access to the internet. Cost breakdown is $15.00/month for the DSL line, and $9.99 for the ISP less email services. If you own your own domain and already have email through your hosting company, or only use the free web-based email services - this is the cheapest "fast" connection you can get. This price is for the "slow" DSL, not the "fast" DSL. I was going to call bullshit on griz's cable/internet cost of $58, but then realized he's sitting in Colorado. Wow... we're getting screwed out here.

And power issues. With my luck, when I need an aid car dispatched to my place, my ISP will be down AND my cell phone will have 3 seconds of battery left. Which also brings up another point - most likely where you're at, the minute you call 911 from a land line, they know where exactly you're calling from. Not so with a cell. Might also be an issue if you have a security system tied into the land line.

Just be aware that you will be 100% relying on electricity for a phone connection. Granted, your existing phone is probably electric dependent, but if you have an old-fashioned corded phone around you could still dial out in a power outage.
  21. While that may be true in developed nations, I'm pretty sure that's not true on a world population basis. But then I guess we're talking about our own "stupid" people, and not others', eh?

    Photo question

What he said. Additionally, lower end point and shoot cameras will often advertise "x frames per second" which seems fast. However that speed is normally reserved for a "burst mode" where the camera can fire off say 3 or 4 shots at that speed, but then you have to wait 10-15 seconds to fire off the next one. I believe the resolution of those burst mode shots are also compromised. The Nikon Oly noted above is a LOT of camera for not a lot of bucks, if you're looking to move up to a digital SLR. -kurt (nice quick edit there Jon) ((re-edited to say "oops... I misread that and thought you changed something there in your post Jon. Sorry."))
  23. You drunk tonight? This is some funny shit. "I contributed so I own part of this site." Go do a Whois... see your name there?
  24. You're here, aren't you? And just who do you propose be the judge of "how well suited they are to society and/or the environment".
