many people don't insure themselves who live in coastal areas subject to hurricanes or on flood plains, even if they can afford it
If you live in a flood plain, you usually can't get insurance (except from the gov't). But fire insurance is basic. And if you don't own your home, you have to be insured anyway. So if you own your own home outright, why would you not insure your investment? I don't get it.
