Only one thing I can add to everyone else's good advice: you can find photos of the beginning of each pitch here: http://www.summitpost.org/show/mountain_link.pl/mountain_id/2212. It makes it incredibly easy to follow. We were up there on Saturday also, and like Joseph said the wind was howling! Other than that, it's a great climb.

OK thanks folks, maybe it is Eagle Rock. I was thinking that this rock was on the south side of the river, but I could be wrong. I need to go back and check it out!
-
Allright all you Oregon adventure climbers - anyone know the name of this rock? It's near the North Umpqua River - just near the intersection of Hwy 138 and FR 28 (Copeland Creek Rd). I believe it is across the river from Eagle Rock, but I don't remember exactly which side of the river it is on because I took a bunch of photos and now I can't remember which is which! Any info??

I have to work on Friday (and possibly Sunday) so I am looking for a one-day alpine trip on Saturday. I'd especially like to do the West Ridge of Prusik. Anyone interested? We can meet at the trailhead Friday night, or drive together if you are near Portland ...

Ivan - thanks for not sticking that bolt back in - that would have freaked me out! You might be right about being able to aid past the missing bolt without a cheatstick, but I can't imagine how. The next bolt was probably 6 feet above my head and I couldn't hold myself up to stand on the top step of my aiders. But then, I'm no giant ...
-
Ahhh so that was you!!! We went up on Sunday to do the Pioneer Route (first time aid climbing for both of us). I got halfway up the bolt ladder only to find a bolt missing, and no way to reach the next one! We rapped down but didn't want to give up, so my partner ran back to the car to get a big collapsible tent pole while I fashioned a clip stick out of a biner, rubber band, and two shoelaces tied together. We got back on the climb, up to the missing bolt, I assembled the tent pole gadget, and clipped the bolt above my head. Amazingly, it worked and I was able to tie some slings to my aider to climb above the missing bolt. Good thing, too - I would have hated to leave a 20 foot tent pole hanging from the wall!
-
I don't remember that ledge - I may have been a bit above it. I saw a ledge below me with two bolts & slings, but I assume it was for a different route.

It wasn't a great climb due to all the moss on the rock (even higher up on the wall!). If it got climbed more, though, it would be a lot of fun. The climbing was easy (just a few moves here and there) but the setting and views are great.

Cool - yes I definitely remember that ledge. We got out of the gully onto that ledge, and then belayed the next pitch from there. Interesting - the chimney could have been _below_ our first pitch? Thanks for the pic.

Anyone have any information about the Satellite route (5P, 5.7)? I think we climbed it on Monday, but I read a trip report on the net that suggested that we started in the wrong place. The guidebook mentions the start as either a "right-facing corner" or a "5.2 chimney" on the far left side of the wall. We didn't find any chimney but we did find a prominent right-facing corner which we climbed up to a roof. Then we traversed out to the left, up a low 5th class gully, and then back right onto the slabs. A picture of the start is attached. Anyone else climb this route?

Sat - hiking on Mt. Hood. The North side looks nice with a fresh coating of snow! Sun - mtn biking near Hood. I stop for a rest at an old lookout site. As I'm soaking up the sun, a gust of wind knocks my helmet off the rock, and I watch in slow motion as it bounces off the rocky cliff and into the brush below. Crap, now I have to climb down and get it. I decide to make it more interesting by downclimbing the rock. I'm traversing about 8 feet from the ground when I am suddenly getting stung repeatedly by yellow jackets. I'm swearing up a storm and swatting them as I bail off the rock, taking a big jump into the pine needles below. Somehow I land right next to my helmet and I practically fly back up the rock towards the trail, still getting chased by the bees. Today, my legs are sore from the stings

Long shot ... does anyone have a permit for the Enchantments on Sat you don't need and are willing to sell? A partner and I would like to do Prussik Peak. Alternately, anyone with extra space on your permit that wouldn't mind two guys bivying nearby? I'm not sure I want to try the "Prussik in a Day" epic!!

[TR] Forbidden Solo- Up the West Ridge, Down the East Ridge 7/25/2004

The schrund was still passable on Sat although the snow bridge was getting very thin - it probably won't be around much longer. You can climb halfway up the snow gully until you're stopped by a vertical section where the lower gully sank about 8 feet. Unless this turns to ice and you can lead over it, you have to climb onto easy but chossy rock on the left to bypass it. -
Great pics - very beautiful place! I wonder if we saw you signing in at the ranger station Friday night? We headed up Forbidden on Saturday. Great weekend to be in the north cascades

Great pictures! We camped at Lake Ann on Sat and climbed Fisher Chimneys on Sunday. That fire was looking scary on Sat night, but Sunday it seemed to have been put down. There was still quite a lot of smoke hanging around the valley though. When we hiked out, we saw that the trail was closed and ours were the only cars in the parking lot! -
Wow - that sucks to have people stealing right from the toprope anchors. What are these people doing with this stuff? Selling used webbing on the street?
-
Anyone want to climb at Beacon Rock today (Sunday)? I would love to do some of the easier routes (5.7-5.9). Other climbing near PDX is good too ... send me a message!
-
I don't know - looks cool though! Might be fun to check it out sometime.

The best way to do this is with an old stereo camera - for example you can find lots of "Stereo Realist" cameras on Ebay for around $120. The camera has two lenses and takes two side-by-side pictures simultaneously. Normally you load it with slide film, and then look at them through a viewer (similar to the ViewMaster slides). The effect is amazing (much better than crossing your eyes to look at a print). I've taken tons of pictures like this. The problem is that they are hard to share on the web (slide scanners are expensive) and hard to view without the viewer. And, the camera is heavy!

Wow there are some great pictures in this thread!

Yeah I've got the same problem. Wanted to go to WA pass for the last two weeks but ended up changing our plans. I'm tempted to just go anyway this weekend!
-
Wow - those are fantastic photos - especially the sunset ones. Good job! -Jim

Russ - yes that was probably us. We followed your ski tracks back to Ingalls Pass and then down through the trees a ways. I was kind of jealous, because during the brief break in the weather it looked like a great place to ski!

Maybe it snowed a lot Friday night? Sorry - I guess I was referring to the slabs right next to the lake. Those are still under snow. Thanks for the correction ...
