How much of an ongoing problem is bolting cracks?
EWolfe replied to mattp's topic in Rock Climbing Forum
I said I am not proud of them doen't mean they are not decent routes. Just not as good as some of the others - and I have received both positive and negative feedback on the ones I am not so proud of. Others think they are great, or bad. I saw the line and put it up, I don't feel a need to chop something with mixed reviews. If it had all been negative, well, yes, by all means. -
Generally the first ascentionists of the area, which usually is a group of locals (but not always). Ethics change, too. But it is narrow-minded to think that you should make no effort to find out what pre-existing ethics are in place before plugging in a bolt. That's just lazy. The climbing community is small enough that someone will know someone else who climbs locally. Knock on some doors.

This is true. I have put up some routes I am not proud of in my younger days. People started bitching about one route in particular, and if they had chopped it I would not have really cared or gone back and rebolted it. It's too much work, and chopping usually comes about after some real bitchfests, adding further disincentive. You would have to be really egotistical to (a) chop a route without discussion (soley on your own beliefs[unless you are the first ascentionist]) or (b) go re-bolt a route that has been decided by consensus should be chopped. By the way, none of these were bolted cracks -
There is generally contact information in the guidebooks, and usually local climbing shops have information as well.

I was only suggesting that was a path to locating the first ascentionist, but you knew that, didn't you?

Just so we're clear, First Amendment rights do not extend to a private forum--and as much as you may think this is a public forum, its not. Its privately owned, privately maintained and privately funded. Therefore, the owners of this forum are welcome to censor whatever speach they desire--regardless of your perceived freedoms. An analogy might be if you walk into WalMart and start spewing epithets. They'll jack yer ass out of there just like the moderators here can do. Well put

I was driving through Georgia once to check out a bouldering area in the north, and saw ball lightning - crazy shit. Did you hit Rocktown? Dat place is cool, I am not a boulder by any means but I had fun there a couple of days. That was the place! Nice climbing, solid stone, beautiful setting, and warm in December.

It seems like the first ascentionist has an obligation to do several things: 1. If you are going to place fixed protection, do it so that the fixed protection is safe (I am not saying that the route needs to be made safe) 2. Insure that no one subsequently doing the route will be killed or seriously hurt by rockfall, again, if you have placed fixed protection. Subsequent ascentionists should check with locals (if they see fixed...) and talk to the first ascentionist about redoing the fixed protection before doing so. my dos centavos

Thanks Viktor! By the way, nice job on the new book

Lance? A wake-up call? This is not the police state Nevada is. We don't have development infringing upon the very areas we are talking about, nor the hundreds of thousands of visitors per year. This is "cascade" climbers -

So how do folks feel about the latest going on about the WTO trying to get the US to drop the subsidies to farmers and allow free trade with developing counties? I think that YOU DON'T OUTSOURCE FOOD - fuck 'em.

I can never seem to get the bolts to stay in the cracks - maybe I'm doing it wrong... -

incomprehensible. wtf is 'the same nature'? how come statement 1 is contradicted by statement 4? Now THAT is sounding like Taoism

Thanks a lot, Sphinx. You are a part of this getting moved. Did I hurt your feelings? T'was the destiny of the thread anyhow. Nah, I don't give a shit. I am glad the moderators are keeping that forum fairly up and up though.

What are they? Mine: - commercials at the theater - people who think their out-of-control dogs are "being cute" - loud belligerents - driving slow in the fast lane

Good thing the belayer brought that pulley for setting up a toprope on that sketchfest
