I don't see it just as an environmental thing, I personally see it almost more as a safety thing. I don't have as much of a problem with the sports cars that get 15 mpg as the SUKs that get 15 mpg. The SUK blocks the view of everyone behind them, and anticipation is a big part of driving. If you fall back far enough so you're at a safe distance, you're about 10 car lengths back, and people (chances are it'll be another SUK) will pull in front of you. Also, they outweigh me 2 to 1. The extra mass makes it much harder for them to stop or handle well at all to avoid an accident. I don't see how that can be considered "safe". Sure, they're environmental catastrophies, but I consider the safety issue more relavent to me. Thus the reasons I don't like (large) SUKs.

Good call. I only get one body, so I'm trying to not screw it up. I figure the best way to improve my climbing is to get out and climb. If it's hard for you to get up a mountain, get out more and get into better shape rather than trying to take pills to do the work for you.

I'm just saying that the Mazamas (and probably Mounties) aren't necessarily the best places for young people to meet each other, because there's just not a whole lot of us... btw- next Tuesday try the 9 miler, it's much better than the others

Same applies to Mazama Mamas! The problem being, all the Mazama Mamas tend to be well over 30! (and yes, there certainly are exceptions, they just happen to be few, far between, and in most cases, attached!)

People complain about Mounties taking over a crag so you can't climb there, but how is that any different than you telling the Mounties they can't climb there right now? You're the one who should be banished to the mossy choss.

If you now think that a Forester and a circumcursion are in the same ball park, you need to take your head out of your ass and stick your thumb back in. They're in two totally separate ballparks (actually, the circumcursion isn't in the ballpark, it takes up the whole soccer field!)

I'm going to try and nurse my car through until this summer when the Forester 2.5XT comes out. More ground clearance, more room, and more torque, and almost as much HP as the WRX. Also more practical. There'll definately be a sacrifice in handling, but Foresters don't exactly handle poorly. I just don't know how much it's gonna cost.

I agree totally. The best days of my life have been the ones that I've pushed myself the furthest. I've screamed out in pain many times, yet I'd go back and do it again in a heartbeat.

Look at the ones that take the classes and think that some of them would prolly be out there without instruction if they couldn't get it. That's a frightning thought. I'm not saying that you can't self-teach, I'm just saying that not everyone can self-teach. Since when has the general population actually been thinking and using common sense?

Also, do you want these people out there *without* any instruction? I think that would be a lot worse... Mounties, Mazamas, etc give people a way to (relatively) safely try out the sport. I'd much rather have them do that then get some crampons and an axe and do Rainier. (I would say Hood, but people already do that and get themselves or others killed )

Discover Magazine, August 1998. It's an article called "Reinventing the Wheel" I'll see if I can find a link. There was also an article in Wired back in May of 2000 (I think?) I actually been talking with the guys that the articles were written about, and if I could ever get a job there, I may even consider leaving Portland. (The original article back in 1998 was the main reason I went into materials engineering.)
