dryad, i thought about this post this w/e. i was climbing with someone who wouldn't have been able to bail me out if i'd ended up off route, in harder territory than i feel comfortable leading. interesting, good point. i've wandered off route into "uncharted" waters before. it's not a great feeling but i was lucky enough to have a good partner who bailed my sorry ass out. i realized that i most often climb with partners who are stronger climbers than i am. a false sense of security to be sure, but none the less it does add to the comfort factor.

minx, you totally missed out. i can't believe you went home after the fish and chips!!! i figured i would miss out but i couldn't face an early morning soccer game w/hangover. a very few things are better than w/friends, and one of them is watching my kid play soccer way too early in the morning in the middle of a muddy field i still want to know what you guys did to e-rock. he's just not right anymore

i don't know! i wasn't looking that closely! these two are a case study in what women don't want! Which would you prefer? That, or this: none of the above!?!?!

trask, i didn't realize that you'd get so bitter when i said those things about your performance. come on...now, you're not that bad. stop kicking the dog, you just need a hug I know it. Would you come sleep with me tonight. I miss snuggling with you. awww trask, it's so sweet of you to ask. but those performance things are still a problem for me. let me know whe you get that 'script from your doc and then we'll talk. but i know the dog would snuggle w/you if you'd stop kicking him. The only performance problem I remember was you hollering how my dick was too much for you and an hour of scroggin' was wearing you out. I suggest you do some calisthenics and stretch maneuvers with a large cucumber. yeah...i know old age will make your memory foggy, you might want to talk to the doc about that too.

good question PP- and that's the reason i think that cracked's point is good- i don't know. i would probably be less intimidated by a trad route w/o obvious protection than a bolted route of similar grade. it's clearly a comfort level/control issue w/me. i trust my gear placements so as long as i feel like i'm going to have them, i'm happy. the question just stuck in my mind b/c so many people have suggested i get back to leading by clipping bolts rather than trad routes.
-
lets for the sake of general discussion leave the particular crack out of it. no reason other than since it was my lead, my impressions of it are what mattered not everyone's experience on it. yes, it was sustained strenuous. not a lot of breaks but pro just about anywhere i wanted. had to run it out a little in a few spots. the bolts were reasonably spaced, no it would not have been a clean fall but the route was fairly short so it wasn't particularly tiring.
-
and doing it so much better than you w/so little experience
-
i'll ask nicely, one more time, please don't turn this into a bolt v. trad thread. there's been some good posts and i'd like there to be more. i agree w/crack's point about the grade. at this point i am talking about easy to moderate routes. nothing harder than .10- For example, i found myself last w/e perfectly happy and comfortably leading a fairly long and sustained .9 crack but that same afternoon a .9 sport route had me shaking between bolts

look i just don't know how any of you would trust your life to biner bootied off some college kids pack? do you know what those must go through? the stress associated w/having a coffee cup AND keys attached? some of them might even have picked up the whole pack by grabbing the biner? they might have even been dropped from the great heights of the mountain bike the kid rides around campus? how can you take such risks????

well thats no use to us this weekend, now is it? nope! but my fat arse is pretty useless anyway hey...just figured i'd make a feeble attempt to usurp your thread for my own personal benefit. it's all about ME!

there are lots of cool women who post on this site only occasionally. (probably b/c they have lives) just like there are plenty of male posters. Many people who don't post regularly have plenty to offer in the way of interesting posts. hi girls!

me and my fat arse will be there next w/e.

thanks for the thoughtful replies. interesting to see other perspectives. alex for the detailed, thoughtful response. i think for me, being a control freak, it's the fact that when climbing bolted routes i'm confined to having pro where somebody else wanted it. i hate to whip out the height card but i think part of it is related to being shorter than the people who placed the bolts. i often find myself in a great stance to clip and find that i'm 6" too short to reach the bolt and up clipping from a less secure position. such is life, no big thing but i do think that contributes to it.

nothing wrong with that! when i was kid, we weren't allowed to ride our horses w/o wearing a helmet til we were 18. i thought i was so cool and it was so much cooler to ride in the summer sun w/o that i did. then when i was 19, in a silly accident i got feel and hit my head on a rock. received a severe concussion and still don't remember 30 min of my life. i was going far less than 12mph at the time. not that i wear one when i ski, i just don't see a damn thing wrong with it and certainly won't chastize someone for doing something safe.
