But his computer is broken.

AlpineK, many of those jokes first saw life as pollock jokes way back when. Probably Italian before that, or Irish. Some are new. My personal favorite: Q: How does a republican commit suicide? A: He gathers his hate into a pile and jumps off.

Distinguishing Alpine Climbing from Cragging
catbirdseat replied to Necronomicon's topic in Climber's Board
Alpine = "adventure" I rather like Necro's definition , but rephrased. "In Alpine, no one can hear you scream". -
While it is true that I do have way too much time on my hands, I didn't have a choice on the slings. All my climbing gear is stored in the house (we have no garage). My wife would complain of the smell if I didn't take care of it.
-
Agreed. You can't go wrong climbing with girls. Well... maybe you could, but what the hell.

No luck thus far. My daughter had to go down to the police station to file a report. They won't even come by anymore as they did when my van was stolen in 1990. It looks as though she will become the new owner of the old Acura that was tiding me over until I could get my truck inspected and licensed, which will be tomorrow.

I like whatever kind of climbing I happen to be interested in at the moment. It's all good.

Words are cheap, aren't they?

I'd say this thread has just about played out, especially considering that I don't have anything original to add to it.

That's right, babnik, divert attention from a national issue of great importance to one of only local and minor importance involving a polical figure, a classic tactic of the Right. We're going to pay for this failure to control invasive species for a long time to come. It may be that the cat is already out of the bag, so to speak.
-
Invasive weeds are by definition those that livestock will not eat or which are harmful if eaten. Since cows preferentially eat the nutritional native grasses, they allow the weeds to take their place. Furthermore, cattle spread weeds around as the seed cling to their hides. Grazing on public lands: .

Need Help with Glacier Ice Worms in August!
catbirdseat replied to paulahartzell's topic in Climber's Board
So did anyone mail some worms to this woman? Inquiring minds want to know. -
1:1,000,000 chance. Right, we're all going to die.

My daughter's 1990 Honda Civic Si was just stolen from the Safeway parking lot in Greenwood. It is red, license plate (WA) 155GFK. If any of you see this car, please call the police.

I'm almost falling out of my chair!

While it's true that I am relatively inexperienced, I'm not a total newbie. I just think the Newbie Forum happens to be the best place in which to ask such questions. In this case I don't think there is one right answer. It is a matter of personal preference. I wanted to see how various people do things. For example, I would have thought the unruly lummox would be the one to dash up the route and deal with the mess later. So my guess was wrong there.

Trask I think it is foolish to use a moderator's dick when you could have used someone else's dick. [No you can't use mine.]

Here you go Greg. I believe we should build as many nuclear power plants as we possibly can. Does that sound like a radical environmentalist? Nuclear power produces zero carbon dioxide, and we now have Yucca Mountain repository in Nevada in which to put the waste. We've spent billion of dollars to develop that site, so let's use it dammit! We could use the clean electricity to produce hydrogen fuel for use in the fuel cell vehicles that Bush has been talking about.

I had a partner who was adamant that he would never under any circumstances enter that couloir no matter what time of day, time of year, going up or down. He said every time he'd ever been to Cascade Pass he had seen ice fall thundering down the slot. So yes the traverse is a waste of time, if you aren't afraid of the couloir. If you have the extra time and have a lower risk threshold the traverse isn't all that bad. No I didn't put the slings in the washing machine. I used a bucket of warm water and dishwashing soap.

As one married for 20 years, I can only pass on the advice my grandfather gave me when I was married. "You have to give a little to get a little". Translated that means unless you take your wife on your climbs, you'll have to do something for her in return. So that could mean taking her out do dinner, ironing the clothes, going to a movie. If you maintain a balance between climbing and domestic life, you'll have a happy and long marriage. Yes, kids will put a damper on climbing, but not totally. You'll still get out, but just not as much. Having friends and relatives to help watch the kids helps a lot. Remember to volunteer to take in your friends and relatives kids so you can cash in the favors when that awesome climbing opportunity comes up.

I guess we need a New Australia where we can ship all the poor who crowd our jails. The US now strongly resembles 18th Century England with its gin and opium addicts, high crime, poverty, etc. Rather than deal with problems they sought to export them. They called it "Transportation". One could be transported for something as minor as stealing a loaf of bread. It's too bad there isn't a new land in this world, but there just isn't.

We know that CO2 is probably the strongest absorber of infrared radiation in the atmosphere. Even though it is a very small percentage of all the gasses, it is the main factor in atmospheric heat storage. Since we don't know yet exactly what the consequences are to doubling or tripling its concentration, the prudent thing to do would be to try to keep it at the same concentration as it is now. The problem is that there is no cost free way to do limit CO2. About the only way is to improve efficiency of our homes, cars and factories. Sometimes the money we save on fuel will pay for the investment, although sometimes the payback time is long. One way to reduce the amount of CO2 emitted per unit energy is to favor fuels that have the most hydrogen in them. Natural gas has the highest hydrogen to carbon ratio at 4 to 1. Light hydrocarbons like oil have a ratio of about 2 to 1. Coal has essentially no hydrogen and produces the greatest amount of CO2 per unit energy. Unfortunately, we have lots of cheap coal in this country and a growing shortage of natural gas. Indoneisia has huge reserves of natural gas, but there is at present no practical way to get it to the US. At one time gas liquification was being developed so that large tankers could be used to transport it. People fear what would happen if one of the ships should explode while in port, so there is no port where ships can unload to a pipeline even if the gas could be delivered.

Bias in the media has more to do with what is not reported than what is or how it is done. It is difficult to know what is underreported except when one has first hand knowledge. One way to know is to compare our media's coverage to that of foreign sources that we trust, such as the BBC and perhaps European media, if not Al Jazeera.

The whole point is that any argument can be turned on its head depending on how you look at things. Rush Limbaugh just makes me want to puke. In his world everything is just so damn simple and black and white. Well, the world isn't simple and it takes, thought, hard work and time to solve our country's social problems.

Timmy, first of all, we appreciate all you have done, though we probably don't thank you and Jon enough. You gotta figure that among 3,000 (+/- avatars) there are some sickos out there. If a threat actually affects how you live your life, that's when it is time to call the cops. It is possible to catch and prosecute people who make e-mail threats. A guy was just arrested recently.
