  1. There is an expression: be careful what you wish for...
  2. Klenke, the Post Like Catbirdseat thread can be found in spray. Nice job, anyway.
  3. That doesn't sound good at all.
  4. I'm feeling all warm and fuzzy, now, AND I HATE THAT!

MntGuide's buddy, the cowboy. How come you don't get your own login name?
  6. You got that right, Muffy. George Orwell was 20 years early.

If you go to a doctor who happens to be a surgeon, he will say, "in order to cure we must cut". If he happens to be an internist, he will say, "here, take these pills". Send a Texan to Mars and he will say, "we must drill".
  8. Fixed Anchors in Wilderness (1) Preserving and protecting wilderness values for future generations is the primary purpose of wilderness. All other uses are subject to this primary purpose. All management actions should enhance, rather than degrade, wilderness values as defined by the Wilderness Act of 1964. (2) Climbing, including the use of fixed anchors, is an historic and can be an appropriate use of wilderness, consistent with the purposes of the Wilderness Act. However, fixed anchors that cannot be placed or removed without altering the environment were not specifically addressed during the passage of the Wilderness Act. These should be regulated as installations in wilderness; their use in wilderness may be authorized under Section 4© of the Wilderness Act, which provides that installations can be allowed where "necessary to meet minimum requirements for the administration of the area for the purpose of this Act." Within designated wilderness areas, or areas otherwise protected for their wilderness values, climbing, including the use of fixed anchors, should be subject to the same standards as all other activities that are consistent with the preservation of the wilderness character of these lands. (3) Climbing, including the use of fixed anchors, should be addressed in wilderness management plans, subject to public review, and managed as necessary to protect wilderness resources. The full range of management options, including but not limited to resource monitoring, voluntary use limits, restrictions, permitting, area-specific prohibitions, and the establishment of Limits of Acceptable Change criteria for specific areas, should be considered and implemented as necessary to protect wilderness character when regulating climbing and the use of fixed anchors. Where climbing occurs, all relevant management plans, informational signs and wilderness permits should address guidelines for climbing and the use of fixed anchors. (4) Site-specific wilderness management plans should include certain minimum requirements for climbing. Climbing should not occur where fragile, rare, threatened, or endangered plant or animal species may be impacted, where human presence may interfere with essential wildlife behavioral patterns, where recreational activities may interfere with religious or cultural values, or where it would compromise the scenic resource. Fixed anchors should not be used where there is a removable equipment alternative. To minimize visual impacts, slings and other removable equipment should be removed whenever and wherever possible. The use of power drills is prohibited in wilderness areas. Any alteration of rock should be prohibited, except as minimally necessary for the placement of fixed anchors. Impacts from climbing on vegetation should be subject to Wilderness regulations and the removal of vegetation should be prohibited Adopted by the Board of Directors, May 9-10, 1998; amended November 17, 2000.
  9. I don't know where you are coming from. Everett Mountaineers Intermediate trips are usually just two people, sometimes four, almost never more than four.
  10. Iain is winning.
  11. Jim Fixx knew he was going to die sooner or later from heart disease. As I recall, he had some sort of hypercholesterolemia similar to what Arthur Ashe had. At the time they didn't have drugs like the statins.
  12. http://www.kirotv.com/news/2764233/detail.html Police are looking for the ex-boyfriend who drove off in a blue 1988 Buick LaSabre, license number 886 MWO. The wounded man was shot in the stomach but was conscious when taken to a hospital.
  13. I guess what I am saying is that if you carried such a kit it would most likely be for saving the life in someone else's party. Since medicines expire, this represents a significant expense, and potential libility.
  14. Save your money for gear. Find someone from this site to take you up. That's what it's all about.
  15. I think climbers are more likely to die a la John Belushi, or Jimmy Hendrix.
  16. I saw this on the TV last night. The kit basically consists of aspirin, nitroglycerine, clopidogrel and metoprolol. Sounds good, except that I can't even think of an instance in which a climber has had a heart attack. I have some vague recollection of someone telling me about something they read in ANAM. A fellow I once knew who was about 65 years old died of a heart attack while hiking alone, but that's about it.
  17. I'm taking my preventative medicine today on my lunch break, which consists of running 4 miles in the rain. All I gotta do is get myself out the door, then the rest will take care of itself.
  18. Okay, trask, tell us who "they" are.
  19. I guess you guys really decided it was time for this thread to come to an end. Homosexual photos are the surest way to get the job done.
  20. Dude, I mentioned this in the Patriot Thread, yesterday.
  21. Yeah, write across the street. Minx, have you been hanging out with Muffy in the Chat Room?
  22. The patriotism theme has sort of played out, but the topic of the Constitution has possibilities. I don't have any specific wish that it be amended. I just want to say that I believe the founding fathers apparently intended for it to be very difficult to amend by requiring ratification by 3/4 of the state legislatures. Notwithstanding, it has been amended 17 times since the Bill of Rights (the first 10). The most fertile ground for discussion, I believe is interpretation of the Constitution. Conservative jurists tend to interpret the document as they believe was the intent of the authors, whereas more liberal jurists treat it as a living document which is modified by precendent, current law, etc. Judge Robert Bork, who was nominated for the US Supreme Courst, was of the former persuation. He was considered so extreme in his views by the then democratic majority in Congress that his nomination was not confirmed. The term "Borked" then entered our lexicon. Currently, we have a row over confirmation of some very conservative judges nominated by Bush ( Miguel Estrada , for example, withdrawn in September). The dems consider them so extreme in their views that they are willing to fillibuster in order to prevent confirmation from coming to a vote.
  23. General statements are considered safe. Without facts, there is little to challenge and all is opinion.
  24. Remember, if you have to shoot a non-paying customer, always say you thought he was reaching for a gun. It works most of the time. Isn't that right, trask?
  25. I was on my way to work this morning and was listening to the news on the radio. They announced that a man was shot in his car at a business park in Bothell. Hmm, I thought, that could be Canyon Park. Sure enough it was. There was crime scene tape everywhere and police walking up and down the sidewalks. KIRO TV had a truck there. Police are looking for a blue Buick, license number 886 MWO.
