The Barryvox can operate in analog, then switch to digital after picking up a signal. This serves to increase the effective range in the initial search. Don't quote me on this though. You're right about the Barryvox, but I don't think that's true of the X-1. I could be wrong though On a side note, I've heard the Barryvox is almost too sophisticated (way too many frickin settings,) and confusing to use. I have a plain vanilla F-1. It has good range because it's analogue, and once you've re-familiarized yourself with using it it's pretty dang simple to use. However, hands down, the Tracker is the one I'd want my friends to have. It's extremely intuitive and superior for multiple burials. My impression of the X-1 is it's a not so cheap knock off and two years late.

  5. Brainless does not equate to better
  6. I just dusted off my avvy beacon and a sudden chill hit my spine, do I even remember how to use this thing? Well, I found this and thought it was enlightening, Inductive Beacon Searches. Of course, the most important thing to know about avalanches is... how to avoid them

They are a bit heavy but that may just be because I have a different binding than what you are thinking of. (mine has a large metal plate that the regular binding fits on top of) Some things that suck: -following a ski track is not easy as your track is way larger than the skiers. Like breaking trail all the time, unless there is a fellow splitter in your group. -traversing tracks is hard -time it takes to convert between uphill and downhill modes. Makes rolling ridges and the like very annoying. Flats between steeps too. things that rock: -going downhill!!!!!!!!!!(makes it all worhtwhile) All in all, times are very fun. But you have to think a little more about where you can go, topography-wise. Need to avoid rolling terrain, avoid traverses and find consistent slopes to ride down. As far as comparing it to burtons board, I would rather use the voile as I think it is more field repairable. Lots of small parts for the burton. Send me a message if you are interested in doing some back country this season. I think all your points are valid, but most are generic to split boards in general. I've heard very divergent feedback on the Voile board itself. Everything from it's a noodle to it's a stiffie I dunno, I'd actually like to test drive one. Novel idea, huh? Last year the ski shop up in Glacier was the only joint in the state renting the Voile board. And that rat bastard Voile rep wouldn't lend his board out . My feedback to Voile (and Burton for that matter) is how the hell do they expect to sell any of these things if the manufacturers aren't willing to support retailers demoing these strange boards? Marmont still has the same board they had on the floor last year (and don't demo) for God's sake. Plug for Mike up at Cascade Crags... they have a Burton Split66 they rent out.
  10. You might take a look at Prior Snowboards. They manufacture up in Whistler B.C., and you can demo one up there. They use the same Voile hardware but provide choice in board manufacturers. I'd actually like to know how the Voile board stands up to the Prior as I'm shopping for a split board as well. I tried out a Burton Split66 last season. I gotta admit the board rocks going downhill, but swapping between freeheel and riding mode SUCKS... enough that I scratched them off the list. Besides, I've seen the Burton mount fail, AND WE DON'T LIKE SHIT THAT BREAKS!!

Besides the aforementioned GM. Yeah, I know, I can't talk... I don't know Godzilla. But how about Orbit on Snow Creek Wall? That one fucking rocks! Nice hand cracks, ducky overhangs, ever so daintily nubbed face climbing, and juggy chicken heads to finish just when you need 'em (thanks mattp for letting me tag along.) If Godzilla is anything like that, I gotta I gotta I gotta...

Dude, you misse out on the mountain pissin, sprayed all over us Nick and I finally gave up after a defeated scout for a dry face... got in a decent recon though. There are some excellent cracks perfect for doing what we want to do. Maybe we can try this next week. I just picked up Long's More Climbing Anchors. Lots more ideas and ways to rig belay anchors.

  14. Lambone, you're in right? Any other of the seasoned types... Figger Eight, Peter Puget? Not sure who else piped up earlier...
  15. Weathermen have gotta justify their existence somehow
  16. Sure, I'd like the coaching, but if I build an anchor and weight it, that's my judgement saying it's good, not his. None to blame but me if it blows [ 11-15-2002, 02:01 PM: Message edited by: Toast ]
  17. Sure, now we have an even pair... at least I think we do with Lambone, Leejams, you and me. Gotta hear back from the two of them still.
  18. quote: Originally posted by Dru: Shit disturbing 1) Is Lambone AMGA certified? 2) Is he making Lee and Toast sign a waiver? 3) Will there be lawsuits in the event of an accident? Phuck that , this is more like a good guy offering to coach a few newbies on anchor setups.
  19. Saturday works for me... but we better finalize this pretty quick. Today's Friday For the sake of expediency, I propose meeting Saturday at 10:00 AM at the base of Index Town Wall. If we get our shit together, maybe we can get a real climb in too. Pipe up, who's in?
  20. quote: I took a fast-learning newbie out to Index and let him lead Godzilla (he had already led crux pitches of Outer Space that year). He took a head first whipper. He didn't get injured (his pro held) but his drive to climb appeared to taper off quickly following that incident. You sure you wanna do that to yourself? Nope, but Lambone could use another body to help coach me and Lee on belay anchor set ups Someday I'd like to do Godzilla, but I'll probably follow my first time out on it. 21. Well hey chucK, you can be the fourth we need for Index this weekend and prove it to us
  22. Lambone PM'd me that he's in, but he'd prefer to have a few more of us out there. I dunno, I think a 2:1 ratio is about right... of course, another body would balance us out into two nice pairs. Any takers?
  23. Matt, Eddie...?
  24. Okay, Sunday at Index it is. Lambone, Greg W, Cap'n, are you guys still in to help coach? Chepe's loadin bowls and Lee and I will buy pitchers after I have a hunch Lee's done his homework like I have What I hope to get out of this is some critiquing on rigging belay anchors and some tricks of the trade you guys will hopefully pass on If this works out successful, maybe we can take Wallstein up on his offer to run a self rescue clinic in December. I'd certainly be up for that. Mike, you rock
  25. Okay, all fingers point to Index. Now the question is when. This weekend or next weekend, Saturday or Sunday?
