  1. Always good to hear from an expert.
  2. Buy them tight and they will stretch to be comfy. And never forget that you can take your shoes off at belays when convenient- it makes a big difference on the tootsies to get a break. At all costs avoid tight technical sport shoes that are designed for short burns with high performance.
  3. Yup. Tendons are slow at getting stronger and slow to recover. For a while I had decided that I couldn't work too hard or try too hard and ended up with at least a year off. And don't forget that grip strength, even with individual digits, is really about forearm strength involving tendons extending to the elbow.
  4. Not to be a downer but tendon overuse has to be carefully montitored. The zeal of training can turn into months of downtime and elbow/forearm tendons are very vulnerable. Be careful with repetitive training and become one with your tendons, which heal much more slowly than muscles.
  5. Well I am 6'1" and the route is over my head so I'm not shedding any tears for shorties that can do it.
  6. I am very suspicious of the picture from the Missoulian. Cougars are notoriously solitary (except when mating of course).
  7. You might get more takers if you were going from the bottom up instead. Seriously it is a great hike with some exposure and scrambling. I have done it with no snow in October and it was great but it could get sketchy with snow and ice. And it is long with lots of vertical so fitness is a key.
  8. Just in jest I will remind you that alumni is plural while alumnus is singular. I learned that at MSU. But better than being a 10th generation sheep fucker like most of you MSU alumni. We are proud of being at more than ten generations on sheep. UM is only on their first generation of two legged victims. We'll let ESPN decide the victor on Sportscenter.
  9. I didn't read the whole TR yet. I just wanted to verify that you did some chimneying on Epinephrine.
  10. You may be a sandbagger. Acceptable at 5.9 but frowned on at mid 5.11.

    Mount Stuart

On the other hand, you can learn the world of suffering to ascend or descend the Cascadian in mid to late summer. The only thing worse is bushwacking through thick brush. They are the equivalent of hazing in the Cascade alpine.
  12. you would know
  13. Gotta call this bullshit out, there are plenty of logical reasons to hate the yankees I hated them then became a fan when I lived in PA and EVERY GAME was on TV which is riveting. Then their payroll went into outer space and they acquired A-Rod. I am not on their side right now. Sorry for thread drift, but billbob, I am absolutely serious that Universities everywhere are changing their guidelines. Blame Penn State, University of Montana, and Florida A@M for starters. It is not a good time to be a prankster, climber or not.
  14. Just in jest I will remind you that alumni is plural while alumnus is singular. I learned that at MSU.
  15. I know it is thread drift again, but rivalries have existed forever. There is no logical reason for why Cats hate the Griz, Mets hate the Yankees, Washington hates Washington State, and etc. It is the joy and pain of sports. Sports minded people like to root for somebody. For me in the Big Sky it is MSU #1 and UM #2 as long as they can their football players's peckers are under control.
  16. When I went to Missoula in 1974 I and a friend were on the way to the World's Fair in Spokane. We stopped off in Missoula dressed to kill and found many women in jeans and t-shirts that didn't care. We drank 7 pitchers of beer in the effort and there was a police incident. Montana Men can represent. But it is a big state and go Bobcats. I spent 7 years at MSU.
  17. None of what you say is different from what I said. But I will still say is that having reliable light trumps weight. Every time. Compare the weight and bulk of a camera with a choice of sardines over humus and one harness versus another or the weight of ropes or gear. Or your own weight. Get over it. Go for function and not weight and deal with it. I went spelunking a few times with a flashlight in my mouth. Anything you choose will be an upgraid.
  18. Many approach via Snow Creek for aesthetics anyway. Ass guard, while less mileage and vertical, is the opposite of aesthetic. I bet the larches were beautiful and congrats on catching the trail end of the alpine season in a superb environment.
  19. I agree with Feck, except for that the Penn State scandal created not a rivalry but an entire new set of ethics and requirements for universities. In the meantime, go Bobcats!
  20. I appreciate your story. University of Colorado has a long history of similar pranks. It is not spray or any dis on young climbers, just advice that this is a poor time for pranks at UM, a notorious party school with serious recent political and legal issues.
  21. To intercept thread drift, I suggest picking the lamp of your choice, carry extra batteries, check it all before every trip, and not worry about the weight. When you are doing an alpine start or are stranded in the outdoors at night, you will not be analyzing weight but appreciating the joy of dependable light.
  22. UM barely avoided being the next Penn State. And Boise State keeps stealing MTs best athletes.
  23. In the wake of the football scandals, I would be scared shitless as well of "party school" antics.
