  2. Yeah, I dont think a poor man's bibler is a fair comparison either. I tried using a cheap single wall tent once, probably made out of very similar stuff. The condensation was awful. To save a few bucks, look at integral designs too. A bit cheaper than biblers and basically identical. Still very expensive, however.

    good news from iraq

I'd like to the perspective of one our resident pro-bush, pro-war posters...I'm sure it'll be enlightening...
  4. I like the summit of jberg idea. If anybody needs to find me, that's where I'll be this weekend.
  5. cracked and matt, good calls! I actually did a similar weather beating on baker two years ago too! And hood the winter before that! Rainer is always fun, but I guess I was thinking of something non-volcanic for the scenery factor. I know; sounds stupid considering I won't be able to see very far anyway, but the enchantments were pretty sweet looking in the bad weather anyway! I figure there has to be some other high and nasty places like that which would make a fun time. It's too bad the FL is going up to 10k, considering the recent rain I bet another few days of this would make for some decent skiing at 6k and up.
  6. So this weekend I have some strange urge to pack up a bunch of shit and go walk and camp out in the rain for 2 days and just generally make myself miserable. I did this in the enchantments 2 years ago,and there was something fun about bunkering down in 80mph gusts and not being able to walk straight. Besides the enchantments, who else has favorite places where they think they could have a good time getting pissed on by mother nature?
  7. OK, this is a seriously easy question. Somebody make me look dumb and show me the damn link...
  8. I normally use this page to check my mountain weather: http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/seattle/ If you click on the west slopes you get the nice mountain weather report with the freezing levels. If you click on the east slopes you get this lame report with estimated tempatures, and it doesn't even tell you where the hell they expect those temps: valleys, peaks, high country?? I know there is a report out there that lists FLs for the east slopes as well, but I seem to have lost my link to it...anybody?
  9. So this mean that you can now drive up to the colchuck lake trailhead once more, or is the forest diservice still fucking around with the bridge?
  10. Matt, I believe you are correct in that the hazard was only moderate that day. I think what this really illustrates is the fact that you have to make your own observations and judgements in every situation and not simply rely on the forecasts. I was up backcountry skiing on the day that those folks were killed at Crystal. We were one drainage over and were excercising a good amount of caution because I had very little trust in the snowpack. Despite the realtively low forecast, the conditions in that area were enough to be worried about. We stuck to mainly skiing trees and areas that we cut and felt safe on and we had an awesome day.
  11. Thanks for all the replies. Maybe I'm stupid (most likely) but using the BC online map system I cannot figure out how to turn on topolines, etc. I zoom in to an appropriate scale and toggle the various layers but the map never changes, despite hitting refresh. Has anybody had luck with this site?
  12. The weather is fun! I was hoping to get out and get shit on this weekend if other plans hadn't been calling. I probably would have left the skis at home, but that's cause I hate skiing in shit visibility.
  13. Harry, numeric comparisons for something like this seem really stupid. I think more important is the answer you'll get when you ask anybody, climber or lay-person, what personality they would associate with the exploration of the north cascades. 99 out of 100 people will say fred beckey, not Lage Wernstedt. I only read the last few posts on this thread, as I have no interest in wasting my time reading the entire lengthy thread. Maybe something else went on, but it simply seems as if you have something against Fred and are trying to belittle his accomplishments. John's comments see spot on. His expertise about the range as a whole is really interesting, along with the fact that he put in the effort to compile the guides. I know I, for one, will often say "beckey says..." but I simply mean that as shorthand for "the beckey guide says..." as I never actually was under the impression that his guides were all first hand knowledge.
  14. I'll go check with Beck..... I'm sure WB-400 would have been perfect for hours of pissing rain. HAHAHAH!!
  15. Where is the best place to get topos for the coast range of BC? Is there some equiv. of the USGS? Sorry for the lame question, but I've never climbed up there and have no clue.
  16. There is a similar pile of snow at the base of snow gulch on whitehorse mountain. Rumor has it many years ago the thing was basically a glacier. Now it's a couple piles of shitty dirty snow like your picture.
  17. So did you not get to talk to the guys doing the traverse east-to-west? I would have been cuirous to see how that went for them. The E ridge of forbidden is much more interesting, so that would be a neat alternative.
  18. I have to disagree. Being from Colorado and having climbed in Ouray over many years, there are a lot of non-man-made ice climbs in the area. They aren't 5 minutes away from the parking lot like some in Canada but they are all worth the hike in. BTW what the hell is wrong with Colorado? All the sunshine not to your liking? I agree with him, Colorado pretty much sucks, esp. their overrated skiing. I loved my time in the Canadian Rockies, and best of all, it was cheap! Much of Colorado is overpriced.
  19. are you using a flatbed, photo or slide/negative scanner? If you are using a flatbed it's pretty much gonna suck ass no matter what.
  20. I assume this was sarcasm? If not, you need to learn to look before you step. i like how his partner is getting ready to bean him with a rock. Meanwhile the guy up above just got done shitting in a crevase and returns to find this scene!
  21. Ouch. That tape must be a horrible thing to listen too. It's true, if you play along enough with fire you'll get burned. You listening, Roy Horn?
  22. I assume this was sarcasm? If not, you need to learn to look before you step.
  23. Sounds like my enchantments experience about this time of year 2 years ago. We actually made camp at one of the highest lakes, after coming up from aasgard pass. During a moment of mental lapse a large gust of wind ripped the tent out along with all 12 stakes that were holding it down. By some miracle my buddy was able to tackle the thing before it blew into one of the partially frozen lakes. Without the tent, it would have been a seriously miserable night. As it was we endured pounding winds and sideways snow. The enchantments are fun when stormy!
  24. I love how all the conservitives come out to support Arnold simply because he is not a democrat. Face it, it's a farce the guy was elected. He has no business in public office and was elected soley because he is a well known actor. It's a sad state when having a well known name can get you into an important political office. It also sets a horrible precedent. Do we really want to make it known that public leaders can't make tough decisions for fear of being recalled by some zealots on the other side of the political spectrum with an axe to grind?
