  1. Anyone want to do the south chute/finger traverse Sunday, weather permitting? Normal partners bailed, and I've heard you need a belay across the traverse. PM me if interested.
  2. Small Digital Camera Suggestions?

I don't recommend my canon elph S110. It doesn't do a very good job of taking picture of distant objects (like mountains). It tends to blue them out. Don't know if its something I'm doing, or if its the camera. Good for everything else, though.
  3. Constance on Sunday (6/15)

I'll be on Rainier next weekend. Thanks for the offer though, Norman. Maybe some other time. Anyway, I'll be somewhere in the Oly's this weekend.
  4. Lightweight Mountaineering Boots

I've also got wide feet. I've found that Salomon's fit me really well.
  5. cho oyu disaster?

http://www.mounteverest.net/story/DisasteronChoOyuMay192003.shtml Anyone know anything more about this? I haven't found any other sources confirming or denying. This is a major tragedy if its true.
  6. cho oyu disaster?

    Totally. BS.
  7. http://www.theolympian.com/home/news/20030515/frontpage/6706.shtml Bummer. I tried Mt. Washington via the normal route (1b?) Sunday. Got off route and ended up on top of a 45 degree couloir around Washingtons chin. Hope he wasn't following my tracks. Wonder what route he was trying?
  8. Anyone done Shuksan North Face recently?

    Great pics. Nicely done.
  9. Little T/ski trip

Planning on hiking in on the White river entrance road until we hit snow, and then skiing up the road to the wonderland trail up frying pan creek to Little T, and climbing it if time/conditions permit. Anyone done this or been in the area recently? Good or bad idea? Thanks.
  10. Ellinor-Washington traverse

Good job. Tried the E. Ridge of washington sunday and didn't get far. Made it to the "huge buttress" but turned around due to nasty weather and crappy route finding ability. I'll be back.
  11. Brothers-South Pk

Was in the area last Saturday. Snow starts at the end of the S. Brother trail. Snowshoes recommended for the avy clearings (I didn't have any, and it was slow going). Further up I could see some seams where slabs had broken away. Should have settled more this week though. Good luck.
  12. Little T/ski trip

There wasn't much snow until the white river entrance, but you could tell the road was plowed up to the white river entrance, but not beyond. Not sure if they plow it all year or not. You may be able to call the MRNP rangers to get details.
  13. Little T/ski trip

Biked in Sunday (per philfort, good suggestion) to the white river entrance where the road turned to snow. Skii'd into frying pan (me on A/T, friend on tele...got my ass handed to me). Skiid up the wonderland trail to the last creek crossing where some bridge excavation was required. But we got lazy and turned around (we just had a day). Little T would be a fun 2 day climb at this time. Didn't see another human, nor sign of one, the entire day.
  14. hydrant on mailbox

Hat's off to whomever installed the fire hydrant on top of mailbox peak (100lb+ hydrant up 4000 feet of steep trail). Nice work, and a great fireman's memorial.
  15. Potential Goldmine?

YMCA gym is for little kids . UPS is fun and worthwhile , but small. I don't know of a gym in fort lewis. Where is it at? Is it military only? Spire rock is nasty (easy routes, and not many of them, belaying in piss..not even your own). There's also Evergreen in Oly. I concur with the thread topic though, a gym is needed in T-town.
  16. Karhu Meta skis

Anyone used these for backcountry/approach type stuff? They're stubby 120cm skis that are fairly wide. Do they downhill at all, or suck in general? Reviews on the web are sparse, and I've never seen anyone use them out climbing. But, if they trek better than snowshoes and allow you to ski moderate downhills, they might be better than snowshoes w/o the weight of backcountry skis and boots. Any info on how they perform would be great. Thanks.
  17. advice on ing water from freezin

I use the blowback method and it works fine. As long as your bite valve doesn't leak, the fluid shouldn't creep back down the tube. The only problem is that if you forget one time, the tube freezes and its all over.
  18. Pickets

Keep them lashed to the side of your pack. Just reach over your shoulder and slide em out.
  19. Beckey guide ed. 3

Saw the latest 3rd edition of the CAG yesterday at borders (vol 1). Anyone previewed the new edition of the CAG? Curious as to how extensive the changes were.
  20. Homemade Clif Shot substitute

Should consider grinding up some Ibuprofen and putting it in there as well. More powerful prescription drugs for those bushwacks where you lose a pint of blood.
  21. Digital Camera Recommendations?

I've used the Canon S110 digital elph for a year now, and am generally happy with it. 2.1 MP is enough for me (you can get 8x10 quality prints and barely see pixels. 5x7's are photo quality). The movie capability is decent, and it works well in cold weather, and its very compact. The only thing I don't like about it is its ability to capture far off stuff (like distant mountains). It seems to blue alot of them out. Not sure if I can mess with the modes a bit to get them back in. Get at least a 64meg card and an extra battery. The batteries last for lots of pics, if you don't use the LCD to review your pics after you take them. 2X zoom kinda sucks, but once you get used to a 400mm zoom on an SLR, nothing's good enough anymore.
  22. Mt. Deception conditions?

I've heard its mostly melted out and a bit skechy. Lots of exposed mud/scree climbing, but do-able. Good luck.
  23. Karhu Meta skis

    Guess not....
  24. S. Brother conditions

Anyone been up the S. Brother recently? Heard there was a good glissade most of the way down and was just wondering if that still exists, or if its totally melted out. Danka.
  25. S. Brother conditions

Don't know what the road looks like to mildred lakes, but its fine up to Putvin and a little ways beyond. I've gone from Lake of the Angels to Mt. Stone before, but not the upper Lena-st. Peter's gate. I'd like to bag the stone-skokomish traverse sometime, though Mt. Skok looks like a lot of scree up the east side. Cruiser looks like fun though.
