  1. whatever. /join #cc_chat Welcome @irc_fiend, to #cc_chat
  2. but what about the overly-aggressive sperm whales? and the kraken? Maybe they could install turrets with laser beams every mile or so.
  3. I don't need to see those pictures again. It is interesting to note that Dru knows who the chat regulars are, indicating he himself is an irc fiend.
  4. ashcroft would soil his pants
  5. I'm not sure but imagine the BO you'd have with a flap of skin in your armpits like that! I wonder what it was like for the early flying squirrels who were darwin's "test pilots". That would have sucked.
  6. it looks like it's puking into a bag.
  7. I like dru's solution. If you feel you could exceed minor axis on a glacier fall perfectly on the gate (usually around 7kN), the rapide makes some sense. This seems unlikely in snow-covered glacier country where you would be roped, but you're wearing a big pack, a lot of gear, big crevasses, slack, who knows. Better safe than sorry I suppose.
  8. you're a fischer big stix man, eh? waterski. p.s. I agree this is quality cc.com material.
  9. I remember that log, just downstream of the parking area. I remember hunting for it in the dark after coming down from e. morn. spire that trail up from there must be brutal with snow on it
  10. A single locking carabiner is widely considered perfectly adequate for glacier travel.

    The Battle For Third!!!

omg I'll shut up for awhile.
  12. I wonder if the USFS will demand its removal, as it is in a wilderness area. That would be a big bill for the guy.
  13. Wow, remember it's all about having fun guys. However I would agree that the OSU mountaineering club has a pretty appalling safety record compared to other programs. As far as I can tell, there is no faculty oversight of that fairly inexperienced group. This may have been a contributor to some unnecessary and even tragic accidents. Often they seem to rely on luck alone to get out of trouble. I believe OSU should look to the U of O when it comes to running a well-oiled outdoor program. Someone's gonna get sued. Then again, they may have cleaned up their act. Considering OSU's administration, I doubt it.
  14. nice! finally an end to the monotony of mt hood reports
  15. you were not the only group to make that mistake this weekend, and ANOTHER group did it last weekend. what the hell? are they giving away beer up there? folks if it gets over 45° you are NO LONGER on leuthold couloir.
  16. No kidding Billy. They were trying to do Leuthold Couloir, but took a bit of a left turn in the dark. They were way the hell up there on the south side of the ridge, in a rime gulley. My goal is not to wind up on the reid glacier for at least one weekend this month.
  17. 2 climbers stuck on the upper buttress of Yocum. A hoist was not successful, so they were "encouraged" down the exit gulley to Leuthold Couloir around 3 in the morning. It took hours to find them, nestled up in the rime, so it went well into the night. A very happy ending.

    spiders...blech

nice. Well it almost certainly isn't a brown recluse, but odds are much better it's a hobo spider. They're common in houses and can give a very nasty bite. That website is a good one to read up on them. They are very fast.

you might want to try: http://www.hobospider.org/ and take a look at the contact under the link "physicians and health care professionals". there is someone at UofW who identifies hobo spiders. He might help you. -Iain
  20. hah I think I fell in that same crevasse a few years ago. Spooky since my partner was hanging out on some steep ice at the time. I think he was more scared than I was, but he held me and I was only in up to my chest.

    chemistry question

well so much for my chemistry. I know nitrogen trichloride can be a product at some point, and as far as I know, that stuff is nasty.

    chemistry question

well upon further inspection, I guess I was wrong, it could not be chlorine gas, since I think you get that from mixing acids with sodium hypochlorite. nevertheless, it's bad!

    chemistry question

also depending on the concentrations of ammonia and sodium hypochlorite you could have formed nitrogen trichloride or hydrazine, both extremely toxic and highly explosive
