  8. don't waste your money on beginner's tools. Get something good the first time around so you don't end up with a bunch of tools and like the tools on this board bwahaha
  9. I don't see that photo as detrimental. A candidate who considers space exploration and atmospheric research important is a candidate for whom I'd consider giving my vote. On the other hand, that photo of Bush in the flight deck outfit just makes him look even more out of his element. What a tool.

Apparently wisdom does not come with age, sorry I was a little dense there.

    thanks! but I'm a vegetarian
  12. I did the Portland marathon a few years ago on essentially zero training. I was punished for this. The worst part was I biked to the event and had to bike home afterwards. You learn a lot about running longer distances that you might not know if you don't do it much. Such as, you have to eat something. Gu would be a good thing to carry. You also discover why they hand out vaseline along the course. Don't start too far near the front of the pack, or you will burn out trying to keep up. At least I will. It was a lot of fun! Portland is a really organized event and they make it really fun.
  13. 131 Hogsback Ave?
  14. Mr. Machiatto was actually up at 5:30am? Unbelievable. I remember prodding him with a boot trying to wake him up while climbing EMS over there.
  15. Some routes just don't work well with many people. TFJ is certainly one of them. I've heard people have turned around at the parking lot when they see the onslaught begin. Six on the easy routes up Hood, for instance, seems fine if not fun. TFJ south and Washington n. ridge often seem to be peoples' first introduction to climbs of any real exposure. This seems to lead to unnecessary shouting about really being on belay, tangles, thrutching leading to rockfall, etc. Plus half the time it seems like the folks just met each other in the parking lot, so have no idea about each others' abilities.

  17. sometimes I wonder if the mazamas themselves are fixed gear.

  19. gneiss is nice, all the rest is just schist
  20. Too short of an axe can put you on steep enough terrain for taking a bad fall but not steep enough to do solid self-belays or check your balance very well. I usually use a 55cm axe and it can get annoying on the sub-45 degree terrain. If you are skiing it is nice to have a short axe though.

    Bad Photo Contest

This is a weird photo. You took a picture of an anchor as you topped out?
  22. Yeah I had some classes with Mr Staats! That guy was great. I always looked forward to ceramics. There's no way he remembers me though, I bet.
  23. No, I had no idea that happened. I graduated from corvallis high in 1994. high rock was pretty empty back then and we had the run of the place. It was fun exploring the river canyons upstream and a great way to cool off after trips into the three sister or tfj and washington. Brings back some memories!
  24. is that "high rock" next to swamp mountain road near Cascadia? Used to go there all the time in highschool.
  25. hilarious what'll bring out the lurkers sometimes
