Iain, what's your source for that statement? I'd dispute it based on the fact that there's no paperwork stating such in the box when you buy the things...at least with the ones I bought. well you certainly did paraphrase because FRS does not require a license! I am talking about the more-powerful GMRS radios that look quite similar to FRS radios but transmit at a higher wattage and on different UHF frequencies than FRS. They are generally more expensive than FRS units. They also can be found side-by-side on store shelves. Here's a good page for info on GMRS and how it compares to FRS: GMRS Info

make sure whatever FRS you buy comes with tone-coding. FRS freqs are really crowded and you'll appeciate the silence.
