  1. From someone in the Portland area, I think there is often a lot of coverage for relatively minor incidents on Mt. Hood. Whether this is a problem or not is up for debate. It is a quick drive and a short flight by helicopter from portland so stories with dramatic footage are relatively easy to come by. Take the most recent incident here, where 5 climbers were trapped on the summit. A good story, but I think the coverage was a little over the top. I'm more surprised that there is such a market for it rather than upset about it.
  2. are search and rescues too common? seems to me there has been a downward trend, but an increase in publicity.
  3. ssh! save it for the publishers. gregm - master of putt-putt you could go on a book tour and sign windmills and clown's faces and stuff

  5. nicely done now turn in your tps report. chestbeating and trolling didn't seem to appear in there, oh well.
  6. ...and where is NEWSTIPS????
  7. Not really a concern as there's just about a 1:1 ratio of expensive compost toilets to climbers there now. Earnest is the climber who can work up a good smash that short of a distance from the parking lot.

  13. I end up placing the smaller wired sizes as nuts a lot of the time and the swaged cables are not nearly as strong (they put in a lot more flex than the typical nut cable). I only have the small gold one (#3?) and a larger (#7?) wired. the latter has been useful in places where you can reach up and slot it behind stuff. you could not do this with a corded hex, but then again you're not exactly placing gear in the best fashion when you are reaching up and blindly slotting things.
  14. nothing like some vans to stink up the room
  15. usually my shoelace just rips out. I wear mid-80's kangaroos exclusively now to avoid this problem. that or some checkered vans, but they don't have the zipper pocket on the side.
