Shame, that shit's probably going to wind up in the middle of some suburbian subdivision's community center water feature, surrounded by lily pads and koi. I dunno, it took their two largest loaders working together to lift it a foot off the ground. It's a gravel pit, and they found the thing underground. I confess, I tried to buy it but the owner didn't really want to sell, and I wasn't sure I could move it. In the same vein, some really large pieces of stone go through town sometimes from the Columbia Granite Quarry down by the Skookumchuck Reservoir. Large as in one piece fits on a large lowboy trailer. My wife and a buddy were going to go in on one to start a bouldering garden, and at $15 a ton the price isn't bad, but the moving and manipulation costs were unwieldy. Pity.

There's a kickass white granite erratic in the parking lot at Miles Sand & Gravel in Tenino with at least a half dozen good problems on it. It came a long ways to wind up here.

I don't know that I'd say "its always in" but something is always in. If TC doesn't look good, the Hidden Couloir north face route is pretty fun, up the first couloir to the end, then up and across the base of the fin. I'm sure that would have been doable, and Ade's report on doing Serpentine in winter conditions sounded like a pretty wild time too. Or go do something like the NE Couloir, not nearly as challenging but I'll wager you'd have fun.

Yes, wilderness area = hand drilling. If it's just national forest, machine drilling is allowed.

I can assure you that Yvon Chouinard, who once flatly stated "there is no rockfall in Sierra gullies in September," is wrong. Do bring a helmet, and be prepared for cold nights, but I made any number of trips into the Sierras for years and never owned a tent.

Particularly the ice gullies in the Sierras. Pleasantly angled water ice gullies usually with solid belays on the rock, I've seen nothing in the NW like it. Mendel, Darwin, Goethe, Checkered Demon, Red Slate, Bloody Mountain, U Notch, V Notch, are all really fun.
