I can assure you that Yvon Chouinard, who once flatly stated "there is no rockfall in Sierra gullies in September," is wrong. Do bring a helmet, and be prepared for cold nights, but I made any number of trips into the Sierras for years and never owned a tent.

Particularly the ice gullies in the Sierras. Pleasantly angled water ice gullies usually with solid belays on the rock, I've seen nothing in the NW like it. Mendel, Darwin, Goethe, Checkered Demon, Red Slate, Bloody Mountain, U Notch, V Notch, are all really fun.

Pfft, gear is easily replaced, sounds like you made a good call. I watched a friend do a similar elevator shaft routine (though not quite as far down) on the Stuart Glacier, also while descending. Those little pocket glaciers can really throw you a curve ball just when you think things are all over. I'm glad you made it out to post this great TR, I find the reports on attempts as interesting as the succesful ones.
