Over the years I've asked the same questions, and got far enough to scope out maps and determine that there are some logging roads on the other side that could get you pretty close up above the cliff. They're still finding good stuff over the hill on the drier east side in the Tieton Canyon, and the Palisades would require some serious cleaning effort and likely wouldn't get enough traffic to stay clean. There's a handful of other crags along the west side of Highway 12 I've idly scoped out over the years, but never with enough intent to get out bushwacking. If you want to investigate your question sooner you might get a hold of Andy Fitz or Jim Yoder, they've both spent a lot of time exploring the east side of the pass and might know more.

I suppose the current Free Solo is just as realistic for most of us.

I'm going to guess that's a bunch of ropes set up for the local crew to climb rope solo with self belay rigs. Winters at Arch Rock in Yosemite are the same way, with fixed lines on a bunch of routes, making it possible to wander out by yourself some sunny afternoon and get in a half dozen pitches, assuming you can climb a half dozen pitches at Arch Rock that is. Not me these days, and I'd have no more luck on the UTW either. Its actually kind of a cool modern community thing.

Thank you for my first laugh out loud moment of the day! In a similar vein, I had an employee ask me what kind tool I wanted when I sent him to the lumberyard, and I said "I want one that goes to 11". Never having seen Spinal Tap, he related this request to the young counter guy who was equally clueless until the older guy behind them lost it, and when he stopped laughing explained the joke.

Whoa ChucK, I hadn't seen that video before. Folks normally assume the Colchuck Glacier is such a passive little patch, but I was telling someone just the other day, "You know, people do die up there." I was thinking of the father-son duo from a few years back, but this was just a case of winning the alpine roulette for those guys.
