I may regret bringing this back up, but what the hell. Again, I will say that the definition of 'selfless' and 'selfish' have been bastardized; mainly by mainstream religion. What is the 'self'? It is your essence, your mind, your spirit; those unique things that make up YOU. To be selfless would be to deny those things. True 'selflessness' is denial of your mind and a betrayal of that which makes up your set of ideals and precepts. If it is within your person to be forgiving, that is not selfless, it is selfish; defining 'selfish' as being true to yourself and your ideals. In your example, regardless of expectations, one stands to gain, or hopes to gain, some benefit from their action of forgiveness. Yes? Therefore, forgiveness is a selfish act. There is nothing wrong with selfishness when defined this way. 'Society' (another dubiously bastardized word) has taken it's own meaning of 'selfish' and preached the evils of living for yourself instead of some ethereal 'greater good' of all people.

Trip to Mexico. Can't remember how many margaritas and some drinking game thing they were doing...Left bar, can't remember hailing a taxi or the ride or paying him. Made it through the myriad of courtyard pathways to room only to realize that souvenir picture was missing. Went back out to search. Was found an unknown amount of time later leaning against a wall, fascinated by a large toad sitting on the grass. Got back to the room only to find I had stashed the pic in my shirt. Next a.m. had to board a ferry boat (bad idea) and then a tour bus (worse idea) to go see ruins. I swore off tequila for about 6 years after that. Other countries: Spain, Germany, Austria, Italy, must include a 6 hour layover at Charles de Gaulle Airport as it made me never want to visit France. Oh, and Canada. Is that really a foreign country?

This "greater good" you speak of is the justification that the power grabbers in this country use to increase the scope and realm of governmental control. "For the greater good" is what FDR used to turn the Interstate Commerce Clause on its head and pursue his socialistic ideas through the New Deal. The 'greater good' that I speak of has to do with sacrifices of yourself for others you love. It is not about "I" - it is about being selfLESS for your family and friends. How often do you sacrifice something for your child? For your family or friends? Does it not return to you when you give to others? That is the greater good I speak of! You can have your Ann Raynd philosophy and use it towards the ways of the world - but with families I don't believe it is 100% true. In large part, it can be applied to families and all relationships, since there is, as you purport, a return on your 'investment' in that relationship, gift, action, what have you. Selflessness is actually a misnomer as you use it. You are making investments in your relationships for ends of your own; this serves your 'self'. Your 'self' begins with your mind; you make choices via some decision-making process. Given that, it is not 'selfless'. 'Selflessness' is denial of your mind.
