  12. Trip: Nodoubt - To base of North Face Date: 1/25/2009 Trip Report: Jesse, Graham, Marc and I left Chilliwack at 5 AM on Sunday with half-baked plans to drive Jesse's truck all the way to Depot Creek and make a one-day run up the north face of Nodoubt. Road was blocked by avvy debris a few kms down Chilliwack Lake from the campground; we started hiking around 7. Reached the beaver pond around 9:30 and the base of the face around 11 AM. At this point thoughts of an all-nighter and questions about snow stability in the higher bowl led to the decision to turn around. In hindsight this would have been better as an overnighter with a bivy near the road end. We also probably would have been faster had we just decided to solo the de Jong route from the get go instead of lug a rack along with hopes of something new. Depot Creek valley is absolutely beautiful in the winter btw. This is a zoom on the upper, interesting part of Depot. The lower 2/3 of the face are not really of climbing interest but will probably get 2-planked sometime sooner or later. Gear Notes: All gear stayed in pack. Bring planks if planning to slide. Approach Notes: 11 km of snow-covered road, somewhat postholey in places

I took a comparative literature course from Dr. Pierre Menard. It was probably successful, but it confuses people sometimes when we discuss the classics.

  24. I know the coming weekend looks like a great one for climbing in the alpine. WA Cascades seem to be going off with some big climbs while around here, hardly anyone is in the mts. because of scary Rockies-like avalanche conditions with a deeply buried facet layer at or near ground. I wanted to know more about conditions for climbing specifically because the avalanche.ca South Coast forecast is oriented mainly to skiiers, so I sent an email to a friend who is one of the forecsters and also an old climbing partner asking specifically if the stability in the WA Cascades extends into BC and if so is it known how far. His response was pretty interesting and here it is: So if you are out in the mts this weekend - be cautious and tread carefully. FWIW It sounds like lower elevations closer to the border are more stable than higher stuff further inland (eg. Silvertip or Outram) to me.
