With all due respect, I'm compelled to bluntly distance myself from your claim of agreement with Naomi Wolf, as your claim to her agreement is demonstrably not valid -- at no time has Wolf asserted that the events you cite are anything other than genuine acts of terrorism, and she did not assert that most acts of terrorism are fake. It is precisely the dislike for motocrossers that must be rallied. It is widespread among backcountry enthusiasts (throw snowmobilers in there, too), and the key to winning this fairly simple us verses them battle. Stop playing nice by finding 'common ground' with the global warming issue and tap into the anger those who give a damn about the backcountry feel towards this destructive sport. Cyclists need to follow the rules of the road - just like cars. I see a lot of them running red lights after a brief slow down. I see a lot of them alternating on and off sidewalks and staying mounted on crosswalks for personal convenience. I rarely see them use proper hand signals. Maybe it's time we taxed and tagged bikes just like cars.

Amazing. A good book on this marathon and related Mt. Baker history is "Koma Kulshan" by John C. Miles (Mountaineer Books). It's out of print, but I have a copy you can borrow if you like. Not quite as good as A. Haines' Mountain Fever, but very entertaining.

My limited understanding: Biodiesel is "new carbon", that is, from recently harvested organics. These harvested crops very recently absorbed CO2 from the atmosphere during their growth cycle. Carbon out. Even though burning biodiesel does release carbon - carbon in - it is carbon only recently taken from the atmosphere. It is not "old carbon" (like oil) that has been bound up in the Earth's crust for eons, but, rather, a zero sum gain on a scale of less than one year. (Not counting the old carbon spent harvesting, processing, and delivering biodiesel to market.) The stated "decrease" comes from the simple fact that by burning new carbon in your vehicle, old carbon will be spared.

The thing is, Tvash, I'm not the one chestbeating constantly (or ever) about my I-90 corridor trail-time prowess. That distinction falls to you exclusively. I'm not sure what your thing is regarding this pseudo-manly pursuit, but it seems to be growing into somewhat of a joke here.
