Does this mean you'll take my bet?

I liked Obama's reply to Ferraro's claim that his heritage was "an advantage": "Let's see now...I'm an African American with the name, 'Barak-Hussein-Obama' and somehow she thinks that's an advantage?" Priceless. I like the man--and his election would not be the end of the republic--but he's got some whacked out ideas about the role of government in our lives. My offer still stands, Prole. Ready to take a stand with Obamallary? BTW: Tell me, Prole: Why do you hate Israel?

Here is a challenge, comrade porolee: I'm willing to bet my presence in Spray that he (McCain) will prevail in the general election against either Hillary or Obama...IF...you care to take the bet and agree to leave here (no reincarnated avatars!) if I'm right. The loser only has to take leave of the spray forum--and only for one full year, beginning two days post-election. (So I can hear you snivel) This generous wager is also open to Tvashtarketena and Crux if they agree in kind.

...Obama will be easier for McCain to defeat in the general election than would Hillary.

Umm.. cause East Timor is its own country now? Reality and/or current events aren't one of his strong suits. Matt would prefer to go around calling others "pimple-faced" and putting words in mouths re Vietnam. Soon he will claim that it is he who is being maligned and personally attacked.

I'll play devil's advocate: Revolutionary War: Yes. Triangular Trade and Brit interference therein. (Stamp Act) War of 1812: No. Mexican American War: Yes. Territorial gain. Engineered by massacre of Americans in disputed territory. We get...the entire American southwest. Feel guilty and pay $$$. (25 million?) Civil War: No. Spanish American War: Yes. Sugar. Cuba. Philippines. Control. Colonialism. WWI: No. WWII: No. Korea: No. Vietnam: No. (Spare me the tin-market bullshit.) Grenada: No. Panama: No. (We lost control of our dog.) Gulf War I: Yes. Kuwaiti Oil. Stopped threat to Saudi Oil supply. Iraq: Yes. Regional influence/demonstration of power all related in some way to the free flow of oil. (IMO)

do you really think chinese government gives a flying fuck what western countries think? plus they know for fact all the fuss would end on empty rhetoric. thanks to bush and his stupidity we have a resurrection of soviet union. so here is the question: when the fuck are you people are going to get a clue what communism is all about!? You don't need to convince me that communism is the ultimate evil. It is. But the fact that the Chinese commies have invested a great deal of money and prestige in the summer olympics tells me that they do care--at least a small little bit--about what the world thinks.

Here's a question: If the Dali Lama returned to Tibet would the Chinese really have the balls to arrest him and/or put him on trial? The outcry would force the Chinese government's hand in a big way, especially if he could sneak back in before the Olympic Games began. Seems to me he has the power to effect change now--if he's willing to risk the ultimate sacrifice.

Agit-prop is the word of the day for sure. Sexy - Have you read any Sherman Alexi? I just picked up "The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven". Holy shit this guy can write! If you're looking for a romanticized version of American-Indian life, this ain't it. I guess his portrayals have earned him enemies in some circles.

WARNING - Graphic content. This is how the PLA handles Tibetan resistance. Do you think these folks had a real trial? http://www.friendsoftibet.org/main/execution.html

do you wish the native american well in their struggle against the capitalist oppressors? In a sense, I do. They were clearly fucked over even worse than the Tibetans. The only argument I would make is that the morality norms of 1607-1830 were even less evolved than they are today. (An admittedly weak position, I know.) The surviving tribes seem to be making a go of it these past ten or twenty years, but I would not be opposed to a reparations scheme. The (so-called) natives then living in the Americas didn't hold the same notions of private property that their western European conquerors did. There was a clash of civilizations and, frankly, raw power won out. I think its sad that it manifested itself in such an ugly way, but does that mean I'm going to move back to my ancestral home and relinquish my property here? No.

Gutsiest thing Clinton ever did was sending that carrier task force through the Taiwan Straits during Chinese missile "tests" aimed at our friends on Formosa. But getting tangled up in the affairs of Tibet is a whole different deal. Like it or not, The United States doesn't flex militarily unless there is an economic or strategic benefit, and meddling in Tibet is not in our interest any more than Rwanda/Burundi was. That said; I wish the people of Tibet well in their struggle against their communist oppressors.

Two bucks will buy you 200 calories in the produce section--and 1200 calories in the junk food aisle. I heard it on NPR, so it must be true.
