To a much, much smaller degree. That Allende won election on his 4th (?) try with a plurality less than 40% certainly makes the case for runoffs, IMO. In any event, elected socialist leaders--and elected fascists too--have repeatedly demonstrated an unwillingness to subject themselves to the inconvenience of reelection. I'm curious if this would have been the case with Allende had he not been deposed, but history pretty much gives us the answer to this question.

And Castro has been better in this regard exactly how? who knows how Cuba and Castro would have evolved if no embargo, no invasions and other attempts had taken place. These policies are as much responsible for Cuba's evolution as Castro himself. Ah, I see. You're saying that making excuses for bloody dictators is acceptable under certain circumstances. In a transitional sense, I agree. I'm not condemning you here; just trying to clarify the thought process. I would point out that Chile is now a much better place in which to live than Cuba--but that is debatable too, I suppose.

As for Allende, I would just say that I consider the nationalization of private industry and the confiscation of privately-owned land to be a criminal act. I'm not sure that excusing Castro's brutality (for whatever reason) while condemning Pinochet's is, in any way, a demonstration of objectivity.

How is this different than your response/beliefs vis a vis Castro from Batista in Cuba? Yet you support his equally brutal regime and the similar manner in which it came to power. Re Zalaya: Are you telling me that if GWB had put forth a national referendum whereby he could extend his presidency another term--and ordered the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs to have the military help promote this referendum--and balked at a Supreme Court ruling ordering him to stop said unconstitutional act--that you would be OK/fine with that? Amazing. I would hope that what happened in Honduras would likewise happen here if the scenario were the same--no matter who was president.

WTF are you talking about? Freedom from what or to do what exactly? Get sick and die in the gutter, drain your family's bankaccount, help pay million dollar salaries of the CEOs of insuranace companies, suffer trade imbalances because Toyota pays no health insurance for its employees, or do you just mean the freedom to pay a bloated insurance bureacracy? Great jigoism. No logic. The ususal. No question that our health insurance system needs reform, but your solution of a government takeover is going nowhere. The funniest thing in this whole national debate, is that Obama will no longer just come right out and proclaim his support for single payer. Why is he doing this little "government option" dance? The answer is that he knows the American people don't support a government run health care system. I'm sure most--myself included--support limits on the darker practices of the insurance industry. Done deal. But why not have the real debate on single-payer instead of all this maneuvering and lying by the administration?
