I know it will offend some that I am not on the road checking for myself but since you were there.... Capt. Caveman obviously hasn't crawled out of his cave yet. Otherwise he might say something to this effect: "...why don't you go up there and see for yourself, dickneck?" Personally, I don't tink there's anything wrong with asking for road beta. Why waste the gas only to find out you've got ten extra miles to hump?
  2. Haven't been up there in a couple weeks, but....I've climbed as well as skied NF of Shuksan this time of year. I think your best bet is an evening approach up the valley. Bivy/rest for a few hours at the base of the route. Then go for it! This way you'll avoid the some of the major hazards of the White Salmon during the day. If you're really worried about it, you could keep way to the left on your approach up the valley. As long as you get several days of freeze/thaw cycles and start the route early, you should be OK. 5. Figger, Thanks for the info...that's exactly what I was looking for.
  6. We'll here it is...the official Black Diamond response as sent to me moments ago... "Unfortunately, we don't have the time or resources to keep track of chat groups and respond to them. We certainly encourage people to contact us directly--our contact information is available through a myriad of different sources (catalogs, product tags, website, phone directory, email.) Feel free to pass our information along: Phone # : 801-278-5552 Web address: http://www.blackdiamondequipment.com Email (as you know): mailto:climb@bdel.com Take care."

I asked that they respond directly to this thread. In case they don't, and respond directly to me, I'll post it here. And if they just plain don't respond, well then....that wouldn't be very nice. 9. quote: Originally posted by mikeadam: Broken Fritschi's and defective ascension skins (bad glue)need to go back ASAP. Just curious as to your gear issues... 1. what model Fritschi do you have and how did it bust? 2. are theses skins you are having trouble with the new "Clipfix" ones? Also, what width are you seeing bad glue on? I'm currently using Fritschi Freerides and just replaced my Ascensions. Wondering if I share the same fate with one or both of the items. I hope they are able to hook you up quickly!

  11. Bueller?...... Bueller?...... anybody?......
  12. I use the Freeride after years of using Silvretta 404s. I'm very pleased with mine; they're lighter than the Silvrettas. Many of my friends have the original Diamer or the Diamir 2 and have only had minor durability issues. Still, I appreciate the extra beefiness and higher tension springs. I feel that the extra beefiness is worth the extra ounce or two. They also come standard with brakes which the originals did not. This accounts for some of the extra weight. FYI: I ordered mine from www.telemark-pyrenees.com in France (Freerides in the "Standard" length are sold-out in North America). They only cost me $205US AND they got them here in 2 days. I highly recommend these guys!
  13. Today: Moonflower Buttress Tomorrow: Cassin Ridge Next week: I plan to winch-cat the Columbia Tower and then ski that too.
  14. Anybody been up the Teanaway Rd. towards Ingalls and Stuart in the past week or so? Just wondering if anyone has beta on the driveability right now... Specifically the Long's Pass TH Thanks for any info!!!
  15. quote: Originally posted by Dru: Dont you have to have a cool Team Name like Team GaperMountain to climb Denali? Actually, our team name was "Invertebrates on Ice." Next time I head up to AK I was thinking of calling my team "giant groomer" and driving a winch-cat up Moonflower Buttress and then skiing down that. Anybody want to see some slides of that?
  16. yup, i believe that's right
  17. TG,I'm pretty sure you're supposed to submit a letter/climbing resume to the Park Superintendant someweeks before your climb and then they keep it on file for future attempts. You might send an email to Mike Gauthier who is the lead climbing ranger up there and get his thoughts. If you don't already have his email, I'm not going to give it out, otherwise you can try: Paradise Climbing Ranger StationClimbing information and permits.Tel. (360) 569-2211 ext. 2314 Open May 3 - June 107:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. Friday - Sunday June 11 - September 27:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. Sunday - Thursday6:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. Friday & Saturday Generally the Finger ought to be in shape by mid-May; as long as we a string of some clear days and sun-baked slopes followed by cold nights to allow the slope to freeze-up real good.
  18. For what it's worth:I've climbed AND skied Cooper Spur under shall we say, "less than firm" conditions. You will definitely want it to be cold and firm on that slope. Otherwise....pucker up! Have fun and be careful!
  19. Salomon X-Scream 9, 187cm, Rossignol lifter plates, Silvretta 404 bindings....excellent condition, used 2 years.Asking $300Admittedly, a heavier setup, but bomber gear that you can trust! also Dynafit TLT 3 boots w/Thermoflex liners, size 10.5 US (can be re-cooked to fit YOU) used 3 years. Banged around a little, but well maintained.Asking $75 If interested, email: savaiusini@hotmail.com [ 04-09-2002: Message edited by: savaiusini ]
  20. My guess is that White River won't open till mid to late May... I've skied the Emmons, Ingraham, Fuhrer Finger, and the Kautz. Right now, I'd have to agree with AllYouCanEat, Ingraham is your best bet. You could also climb Gib. Ledges and either ski the chute or ski the Ingraham. Generally, it's a better idea to climb what you plan to ski. Later this spring, the Finger or the Kautz are very doable ski descents...not to mention the Emmons, of course.
  21. Great job yesterday, Lowell! What did you think of skinning up Lower International through all those moguls? Other than that, I thought the course was great although I personally would prefer a completely out-of-bounds site next time.
  22. I used to own an Ortovox F1 and did fine with it for years, but switched to the Tracker last year.....My 2 cents on the range issue:Yes, you can get an initial signal sooner in most cases with the F1 and other analogs especially in a practice situation where you have very few visual clues to go on. However, in my experience with REAL searches in REAL slides, (admitedly not that many) your first reaction should not be to grab your beacon and start searching. Instead, use whatever visual clues you may have (ie. path and last sighting of the victim)and then pull out your beacon and start searching once you think you're in the ballpark. While the analog beacons do have a longer range, their success is highly dependant on the USER processing the noise and the lights. If you put yourself in the ballpark to begin with, the 2 receiving antenna beacons (Trackers) really excel. ....I guess that might be considered 3 cents [ 03-27-2002: Message edited by: savaiusini ]
  23. to answer Lowell's question:According to the registration form on the Life-Link website, it looks like the entry deadline is noon on Saturday, but they impose a $5 late registration fee to the entry. Otherwise the regular deadline is by end of day, Thursday. http://www.life-link.com/alpental_courseinfo.htm Hope that helps!Sam [ 03-26-2002: Message edited by: savaiusini ]
  24. Has anyone had any experience with digital cameras out there? I too own a Yashica T4 Super which has served me very well, but just got a really nice 4.1 Megapixel Sony that seems to do everything (shutter/aperture priority, auto bracketing...the works). I'm interested to hear any horror stories people may have had with digitals in the outdoors before I start using it much for backcountry shots. Thanks for any info...
