  1. Glad all fingers, limbs and eyes are intact. I use to work at a paper mill. Lots of stuff rotating, pinch points and other things to get hurt on. Use to hear of too many times something rotating grabbed fingers arms people and did not let go. I made a mod to my alum BackCountry Access shovel. handle and blade weigh 16oz and fits well in my pack. jedi
  2. How much does that camera weigh? Sony has a little camera that weighes 8oz without the battery. jedi
  3. A flask of good scotch and a box of Krispy Creames should get any true mountaineer through the toughest month long expeditions. If not, ye'r not worth ye'r salt You guys have had a couple ideas I will give a try Forrest, I am assuming Top Ramin is like most. Around these here parts, the brand at my grocery store is 3oz a packet at 380 cal's. You guys eating 4 of theses? What is TVP? You know the tuna in the (foil) bag has been out for a few years. Now chicken. The local Walmart has 10oz bags of hamburger. Just tear open and heat. Looks like taco's at base camp this year! Thinking about trying the hot dog thing. I assume they would stay frozen if buried.
  4. "If a sport has bleachers, it is not for me as I am not a very good spectator." Jedi "Dare to fail" I dunno but it is one to live by. That Hemmingway quote is flawed (only my opinion). BullFIGHTING is what they call it? Shit if they were fighting bulls, they would stop hiding behind that silly sword. Just a fancy way to kill an animal. Someone should tell them about guns, it would be faster. But he is right, the rest are games The old bold quote. Someone told me that the other night after watching Touching the Void. Old bold climbers are not sending 14d so you don't hear about them, they're around. Not so much a quote as an excuse. Jedi
  5. There are a couple pictures I would love to see in this issue. Anyone have this issue and a scanner??? Jedi
  6. I do remember reading some info a few years back about knots "un tieing" themselves after being loaded many times. It seems there was a rappeling accident where a sling at a rap station came untied. So someone did some research and found knots in webbing comes undone after it is loaded so many times. Moral of the story, check your knots on your slings and knots at rap stations.
  7. Special going on as we speak! Don't lower your partner without one! Guarranteed to last a lifetime of partners! Designed to deploy with even the biggest of mitts! Comes with an easy cut 50m rope! (None of that cut resistant rope, no sir'e) Sharpens easily on the nearest rock! Don't climb without one! This special offer will not last forever, order yours today and get a 2nd knife free (in case you drop the 1st)!!
  8. Yeah, the West Face of Dickie is a hike that you can do in 4 ot 5 hours tent to tent. Easy ground with nice views. Sounds like the Jap Couloir is harder. The standard route on Barrille is just a 2 hour round trip hike from tent to tent. I tell yeah, Mt Wake has had my eye. She's a beaut! Jedi
  9. Just saw the movie last night. Great movie! Really good footage of them climbing. I have kids and have been stuck watching the "Wiggles". I had heard them sing that song "Brown Girl in the Ring" and thought it was a goofy song they made up, now I know. Just the movie I need to see before I go to a somewhat remote (not real remote but no help immediately close by) area and get the hardest route I ever attempted. I have a feeling it will pop up in my mind why I'm there
  10. Talk about bad karma for the idiot(s) who would do such a thing. I could live with my lawn mower, tv, etc... being stolen from my house but my climbing gear is so personal to me. I hope you find the bastards. Hey, you find out who it is, offer to take them climbing. Tell them to try this great 5.5 pitch you know. Put them on some sick 5.12r pitch. When they are crying half way up, tell them you took them off belay. You know they stole you gear and then step away from the belay area as the poop drops. Tell them you are going to pull a Simon Yates on their ass if they place gear and sit on it. Oh...is that thunder I hear?

In something shallow, stacking beaks side by side works. Can't say I've done the same with RUPRs. Jedi
  12. Yes, I have had great service from them too. Nice sale prices too. Jedi
  13. The Nitros are smaller and lighter. They also only absorb 75% of what the Screamers do. Mammut use to make a Spectra absorber but it only absorbed 60% of what the screamer does. Yates tried making them out of Spectra (lighter and aborbs less water) but since Spectra is smaller, you can not get as much stitching into the webbing which makes them less effective.
  14. Come on Dru. You are a "locker". Word on the street is you "lock" when ever you can. Some of the boys at the laundry mat were telling me about your locking binner obsession. You even have locker on your key chain. I saw it the other day when I was binnering in my favorite dumpster. Dru-Locker is what they call ya in the hood, isn't? Just admitt it
  15. Yeah Dru, I always keep that in the back on my mind manufacturers. Point is, he is not selling me Yates wire gates. He probably does not care if I use a locker or a wire gate on his absorber. There is no advantage using a locker on a absorber over a non-locker. In this case, I do believe John knows more than anyone here about absorbers. I am amazed at the number of physics professors and engineers we have on the board Dru, as you probably have noticed, my spelling is bad. Even with spell check It's because I'm a binner, anyone have any kans or bootles
  16. I have just had people tell me in the past that you need to have a locker on the bottom of every Screamer. Therory being that the opening of the screamer might open the gate of a biner by "gate vibration". I have not used lockers on the bottom of Screamers before. Yates described to me how his stitching rips which does not cause "gate vibration" in binners. But he recommended wire gates in the event the binner smacks ice or rock which can cause a non wire gate to open (wire gates are less suseptible as most people know). BUT the Screamer would reduce the force enough that it would not break a binner with the gate open anyway. He mentioned something about John Bouchard and a broken binner. I guess it happened 15 or 20 years ago. That incident is what started people using locking binners on Screamers. Much has changed since then with gear enovations but some people still like the idea of lockers on there screamers. But it is no longer neccessary according to Yates. The way I see it, John as been designing and testing gear for MANY years. He has probably heard a lot of constructive critisim from people who have "tested" his absorbers personally. He has probably tested most of the theroies post here. He would know. In a world where people sue one another for anything, John was pretty confident telling me (someone he does not know) that his product works safely without a locker on the bottom binner. If there was anyone here that was taking the time to deal with a locker in a sketchy situation, now they have piece of mind they don't need a locker if they thought might. That was my point in posting this info. That's all I need, just thought I would share. Take it or leave it.
  17. I always enjoy watch good climbers climb. They make the cimbs look so easy. You think "damn, I could do that" knowing in the back of my head there is no way. I wish they had footage of the other good climbers just trying it on top rope, floudering on the route.
  18. I want the Space Station Tent. Anyone have $3,000 I can borrow? I promise to pay it back when i get a job. I've only been unemployed for 5 1/2 years and will have a job one day.... Man, what a sweet base camp setup that would be!!
  19. In the past, I have known a couple people who insisted on it. I never had the facts to back up why not to use them. Talking to John Yates today about another topic, I asked him about it and he gave me the history on why people started doing it and why you don't. Just thought I would share. jedi
  20. you don't need. Wire gates are fine. Jedi
  21. I had a down Marmot -40 bag in June with a Dryloft shell. I was overkill except at 17K. I slept in my midweight poly pro everynight. I was usually a little on the warm side every night but this was early to mid June. Just my opinion (which means nothing because you gotta live with what you buy) but I would not go with any more than -20 bag and it would be the MicroFiber shell. With Dryloft trapping more moisture in your down than the MF shell, your temperture rating on you bag is reduced after time (unless you can dry the bag frequently in the sun). What's warmer and lighter: a -40 Dryloft bag on day 3, 5 or 7 or a -20 MF bag on day 3, 5 or 7. I have not looked at the spec's on the 2 bags you are talking about but I would look at fill weight. I am amazed at the ratings on some bags in comparison to fill weights. Definitely no standard. How can one bag with 11oz of down (800) have 20 degree rating and then you see one with 13oz and 15oz and up? Anyway, I wish my FF SnowBunting had the MF shell instead of the Dryloft shell it has. All the trips I have taken it on, I have yet to "use" the Dryloft but I bet I have carried a little excess water weight because of it. Just a little nonsense late night dribble....... Jedi
  22. Or how about after 3 weeks when it is no longer white it color? Maybe you body would just absorb it.

    Alpinist 6

I got 6 last week and I live on the East Coast. Will, I'll trade you your #1 for my daughter's SpongBob Square Pants 2nd issue of Patrick & SpongBob steal a balloon on free balloon day. COME ON MAN! That's a killer deal! I'm still looking Jedi
  24. Geeze, all that I can think of is how nasty the bottom of my tent floor gets after a few days (hair, etc...) and then eating my sleeping pad? OR getting drunk on their stove fuel. Getting confused and polishing off some MSR fuel. Yeah I have an edible rope for the cute ranger chick. hehehe sorry but it's late and Cinemax is on. Jedi
  25. That cover shot on #6 is fantastic!
