A syntho jacket like the Patagonia Puffball or MEC Northern Light is BETTER than fleece under those conditions. Except it is not as abrasion resistant. When active you generate your own heat and don't need a fleece on top you will just sweat.

Reverso or XP are the best for ice and alpine - respectively Reverso for alpine or multipitch trad (autoblocking) and XP best braking for skinny, icy ropes Pyramid is decent too - good cragging device but doesn't autoblock and not as much rap/lower friction as XP

I am interested in what the fabric used in these things is. I heard from another source that these things soak up water... I am curious as to whether it is a cotton/lycra blend. It definitely isn't Schoeller, DryTrek, Tweave etc. but then again there are 30 different brands of "softshell" fabric on the market. Any fabric geeks (fishstick? Don?) care to comment?

fleece is outdated i have several fleece jackets and i hardly ever wear them anymore, because there always seems to be another jacket that works better. fleece - not as windproof or waterproof as softshell or hardshell -heavier, less packable and not as warm as lightweight syntho insulated jacket -looks 80s/90s, unfashionable so basically if you are wearing fleece there is something else you could be wearing that would do a better job disclaimer i never worked in a gear store or took a NOLS course so i know nothing!

i found out today that the valhalla pure "softshell" pants, marketed as "dri-trek", are tweave by a different name. at $200 a pop vs. $300 for the arcteryx, worth looking at maybe. not quite as nicely finished as the arcteryx

Where did you put "broke feet" and "rescue called on Big Four" on your climbing resume spreadsheet? In the accomplishments section how do you grade breaking feet - maybe Grade IV/TD-? Have you gotten any sponsorship offers from orthotics companies yet? Since you already described both of these incidents in detailed trip reports on the website when they happened last year, and all your pictures in this essay are also on the website, couldn't you have just gone Link One and Link Two and then filled in the extra details that weren't in those two trip reports, namely that you pissed yourself while tied to a backboard and that your then-girlfriend left you? If the answer to the last question is "No", is posting second TRs for things that have already happened going to be an annual event? Maybe you can rewrite this and post it again in 2006?

I think some people are misunderstanding my point I'm not saying Heckmair was running death camps I would compare his transgression to the incident with Ben Moon appearing in a cigarette commercial. Not all potential sponsors are worthwhile sponsors. Free gear and $$$ comes at a price and that price is your reputation and image.
