I agree that this seems to be fucking many, and perhaps benefiting few, but I'm still not seeing how this plays to the standard GOP demographic (as portrayed by GOP haters anyway) of big money. Who benefits: homeowners who got stupid loan who occupy said home. Everybody who owns property near aforementioned stupid homeowners. Who loses: people who own mortgage securities (Citigroup stockholders, Florida pension fund beneficiaries, Norway, etc.)

I think he just misread the report. The part where it said that Iran had discontinued its nuclear weapons program, Bush misunderstood the word "discontinued", he thought it meant something to the effect of "accelerated". Simple mistake.

Did you read "Get in the Van" by Henry Rollins. It's basically his journal entries from the Black Flag years which gets pretty unreadable after a while, but in his early years with the Flag he didn't have a journal and it is more trip-reportesque. Anyway, why I brought this up is he recounts their early tours where they were basically starving and getting fucked over everywhere they went, but at the same time they were getting shit on by fans at the shows because they were "selling out". Crazy.

Not that I don't agree with you guys, especially the part about bailing out home-flippers, but couldn't this be something similar to when they closed banks and or the stock market in crazy times to prevent a stampede that would cause total collapse? Seems like when homes get foreclosed then it pushes a vicious cycle: values drop, which makes mortgage holders panicky, which causes them to be more agressive on their own foreclosures, which causes values to drop more, etc... If they put a freeze now, then at least all loan holders (partly at fault for all this in terms of predatory lending practices) suffer equally, but all stay afloat. Perhaps the system doesn't totally collapse? Anyway, just trying to see it from the other side. I agree it seems quite distasteful, but perhaps it's the best option of a bunch of bad ones?

Who's money is getting spent? Obviously it will be those who hold these securities. They won't be getting the higher payments that they had counted on. I assumed this would be banks and junk-bond holders and such. Seems like this will make stocks go down and not up. Unless of course, I'm misunderstanding something here.

Funny how the NCCC statement says in one breath how hardly any cars would go up that road (due to no cars being up there and no ferry to bring cars), then in the next how opening the road would cause terrible damage. It amazes me when people apparently contradict themselves in the same statement. It shows that they are not worried about logic, only interested in piling on "facts" that somehow support their point.

Wrong! Protecting, feeding, training, and nagging (when are you going to get married and give me some grandkids!) all may improve chances of continuing the lineage, more than being dead will (which is sorta what this thread has evolved into discussing).

Speaking of kids as partners, one thing that would be waaaaay worse than dying and leaving my kids fatherless would be going out climbing with them and having one of them get killed. Wouldn't matter if it was anybody's fault or not. I've gotta work pretty hard to imagine much worse. That story this year of the father and son on Dragontail made me wonder if the father found his son was dead so just decided to let himself expire due to hypothermia. I'll bet I'd consider it.
