JasonG Posted October 18, 2015 Posted October 18, 2015 Trip: American Border Peak - Standard Date: 9/27/2015 Trip Report: American Border Peak (ABP) is hard to ignore (especially in winter) when you are driving up 542 to Heather Meadows. And even though it is firmly on the mysterious "Repulsive 69" peak bagger's list, I couldn't keep it off my very own list. That's not to say it was quite high on the list, but it was there....for years. But, it is good to have somewhat obscure peaks on your list when therunningdog has a free day to go on a trip. You'll be hard pressed to find a peak or route that he hasn't climbed. While not technically difficult (low-mid fifth?), ABP has the full range of Cascadian challenge (minus the brush) and makes for an engaging day in the hills. You'll want to go in the late season, but hopefully not so late that the talus is a verglassed mess like it was for us. Most importantly, you'll want to follow Klenke's strict orders since you won't run into anyone who can give directions. We were the first party in two years. Choss Dawgery at its very finest. Gear Notes: 60m half rope, medium rack to 2" or so. HELMET. Approach Notes: Follow Klenke: Expect a 12 hour round trip, camping at Twin Lakes the night before highly recommended. Quote
Raoul Duke Posted October 18, 2015 Posted October 18, 2015 Looks like a great trip! Love the "someone's logging, someone's not" picture. Quote
glassgowkiss Posted October 18, 2015 Posted October 18, 2015 Nice! these are probably one of the less frequented peaks in the range. Never really looked at N/NE face of Larrabee- kind of looks interesting as a winter objective. Quote
Woodcutter Posted October 19, 2015 Posted October 19, 2015 Your photography is wonderful. I particularly like the portrait: # 2. Speaks volumes. Quote
Bronco Posted October 20, 2015 Posted October 20, 2015 It looks as chossy and nasty as advertised, good job wearing helmets! Quote
peter_mcb Posted October 21, 2015 Posted October 21, 2015 Well, ABP was already working its way up my list, but your TR just gave it a firm nudge ahead. Thanks Jason for the beta and fine imagery - particularly that impressive N/NE facade of Tomyhoi, and the unexpectedly spectacular north face of Larrabee. Quote
JasonG Posted December 18, 2015 Author Posted December 18, 2015 Thanks for the kind words guys, glad you liked the photos! I think this was one of the more unexpectedly spectacular trips I've been on. Pretty wild back in there, and lonesome. Quote
G-spotter Posted December 23, 2015 Posted December 23, 2015 needs the theodolite measurement from there to Slesse Quote
JasonG Posted December 25, 2015 Author Posted December 25, 2015 Excellent point Dru, I guess I hadn't bothered to look how close in elevation the two peaks are. This photo, taken from the summit of ABP, speaks to it: Quote
