gregm Posted October 29, 2002 Posted October 29, 2002 washington dc has a similar layout, with streets radiating from central circles and squares. the city was rebuilt this way after a british cavalry attack burned the place down during the war of 1812. it was designed this way so the captial could be defended from future cavalry attacks; by placing a small number of canons in the central squares they would have a field of fire down the radiating streets covering the city. most of the rectangular grid streets were added later. what would you do without educated people in your midst?
