What do you expect from a Frenchman?

True. All those angular streets describing so many wedges of cheese, and the long, baguette-shaped malls and parks. It's disgusting.

washington dc has a similar layout, with streets radiating from central circles and squares. the city was rebuilt this way after a british cavalry attack burned the place down during the war of 1812. it was designed this way so the captial could be defended from future cavalry attacks; by placing a small number of canons in the central squares they would have a field of fire down the radiating streets covering the city. most of the rectangular grid streets were added later.

what would you do without educated people in your midst? [Wink]

Uh....That is Washington DC! The White House is bottom center, New York Ave the diagonal heading off Northeast of it.

Aha, at least I recognized Housemann's work...DC as well as Paris. Part of the idea on the wide boulevards was also that an opponent could not quickly come into the city & block off access (w/o a whole lot of materiel and stealth).

DC was designed by Pierre L'Enfant(the diagonals) and Thomas Jefferson (the grid).

DC also built the beltway for self-defense. The gridlocked traffic has the same effect as gypsies circling the wagons [Roll Eyes]

for another fine example of this strategy, take a tour of London's M25
