Jim Posted October 27, 2010 Posted October 27, 2010 Feel bad for the guy but all the bikers I know avoid those metal grates like the plague and just ride on the cement walkway for bikes and pedestrians. http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/localnews/2013265574_gendler27m.html Quote
rob Posted October 27, 2010 Posted October 27, 2010 (edited) It's a road. The state (DOT risk management) knew about the dangers of the gap in the bridge as early as 1999 when it was purposely put in, and decided to leave it because they assumed "not many cyclists" would use the bridge. But using the road is legal, and there were no signs saying not to cross the bridge with traffic. Cyclists complained, and cyclists kept crashing. And then after this poor fucker crashed, the state tried to seal all accident reports involving that spot on the bridge, since that data would undoubtedly be used against them in lawsuits. A judge finally ruled that data had to be public. Another fucking example of the state ignoring cycling advocate's recommendations and going ahead and doing retarded shit anyway that ultimately endangers the cycling public. Novelty hill road. Westlake. Montlake Bridge. The list goes on and on. And it always takes something like this before they finally listen. They should have to change his catheter for him personally. rob Posted October 27, 2010 Posted October 27, 2010 "We're going to put a huge seam in the middle of the road, running parallel to your direction of travel. We acknowledge that this WILL cause cycling crashes, but we're going to do it anyway, and we're not going to even warn you about the danger we've just created. We'll just assume that you won't be on the road on your bike, and if you are, well oh well, I hope you like a wheelchair. And if you DO crash and get hurt, we'll make sure that we do everything possible to prevent paying restitution, including hiding accident reports from other cyclists who got hurt in the same place. Cheers, WA DOT." Quote
Jim Posted October 27, 2010 Author Posted October 27, 2010 (edited) Not arguing either way. I just personally avoid those grates where ever they are, particularly when there is an off-road option. ....but if they knew about as you say they should have spent the what? $500 or so to just fix it. Fairweather Posted October 27, 2010 Posted October 27, 2010 Damn right. After all, this guy paid an annual license tab fee and affixed it to his bike for these roads to be kept to cycling standards. Right? Um, ok. Oh. Really? No? Not one dime? Never mind... Quote

Um, ok. Oh. Really? No? Not one dime? Never mind... He paid his share, as do ALL OF US when we pay our property, sales, and income taxes, which is where the vast majority of road infrastructure funding really comes from. Gas taxes and auto tabs don't even raise enough revenue to pay maintenance of the wear and tear that automobiles cause to transportation infrastructure. Quote

FYI: Homeowners do pay for sidewalks in most municipalities, but it's understandable that you wouldn't know this. Quote

rob Posted October 27, 2010 Posted October 27, 2010 Considering that I pay for taxes on a car I don't actually drive, I figure I'm paying for a larger percentage of the road infrastructure than cagers like FW who drive across the street to buy more lubriderm. Most cyclists who commute by bike often are probably in a similar situation. FW, why are you such a freeloader? Us cyclists are paying for your fuckin roads, man! Goddamn moocher. Quote

rob Posted October 27, 2010 Posted October 27, 2010 (edited) We should have land mines placed in crosswalks. I mean, they're not paying taxes, so why should we bother making them safe? Sometimes I'm impressed by FW's trolling abilities, but then I realize there is a huge difference between trolling people, and just being a fucking asshole most of the time. Fairweather Posted October 27, 2010 Posted October 27, 2010 Some friendly advice: Obey traffic laws like the rest of us, and don't run over/into obstacles and expect the rest of us to pick up the bill. License tabs and mandatory liability insurance for road cyclists. Quote

Right? Um, ok. Oh. Really? No? Not one dime? Never mind... My first reaction was - why was he riding across the grated bridge deck when there was a safe option? I regularly ride over that bridge and the University Bridge and have seen bicycles ride over the grated portion on a handful of times, and even then wondered why take the risk. But - I was not aware of the history. Really - if WSDOT had other accident reports then do one of two things - 1) post a sign that requires bikes to use the sidewalk, or 2) fix the dang thing with cheap epoxy; which is what the did - too late. Option 1 likely would not avoided a lawsuit. But for the rider, a little common sense goes a long way. Quote

Bikes vs Cars - who pays? "People who don't drive much -- including most true bike zealots -- significantly subsidize those who drive a lot. And in any kilometre-by-kilometre comparison of city residents who travel exclusively by one mode or the other, drivers tend to pay less than their real costs, while riders pay more." Quote
