Eric Carter Posted June 18, 2010 Posted June 18, 2010 Hi, I am hoping to head to Baker early next week via the Coleman Glacier route if the weather cooperates. I was wondering if anyone had been up there recently and if snowshoes are necessary or any other thoughts on conditions. Thanks! Quote
DPS Posted June 18, 2010 Posted June 18, 2010 I did the Coleman-Demming route about a month ago. We did not take snow shoes but they would have been helpful for the deep, soft snow conditions we found between tiberline and the glacier especially on the hike out. Otherwise the route at that time was in really good shape with an excellent boot track and no open crevasses. With the cool weather I doubt conditions would have changed a whole lot. Quote
JoshK Posted June 18, 2010 Posted June 18, 2010 In general, I'd highly recommend skis for any slog style climbing in the North Cascades right now, if that is an option for you and your partners. Quote
Eric Carter Posted June 18, 2010 Author Posted June 18, 2010 Sadly my only options are snowshoes or boots... Quote
needtoclimb Posted June 18, 2010 Posted June 18, 2010 I was just up there. No snow shoes needed, but expect to punch through a little later in the day. With an early start from camp, you can be back on the summit and back to camp on hard snow, and have just a little slogging (or glissading) down to the trail. Going up, lots of decent, punched steps to hike up. Quote
kurthicks Posted June 19, 2010 Posted June 19, 2010 FYI we found an 18" windslab on the Roman Wall on Wednesday. it probably baked out by now in the sun, but just a heads up. Quote
