Braydon Posted March 17, 2010 Posted March 17, 2010 What was Somalia like after US occupation in 1993? Was the genocide (or whatever its officially referred to as nowadays) over, slowed, or about the same? Who was in power? Were the people happy in general? How do you think it would have been if the US would not have intervened? This is for an essay I'm writing btw... Thanks Quote
ivan Posted March 17, 2010 Posted March 17, 2010 by definition, if american soldiers were there, the locals were fucking stoked (except for the ones we killed, who were by definition communists n' faggots) be sure to cite me in proper mla style! Quote
Braydon Posted March 17, 2010 Author Posted March 17, 2010 I haven't really found a clear answer online Quote
JayB Posted March 17, 2010 Posted March 17, 2010 May or may not help with your essay, but reading "The Road to Hell" by Michael Maren tells the story of how Somalia imploded as well as any. Quote
ivan Posted March 17, 2010 Posted March 17, 2010 a national geographic from the past couple months was good too basically i'd imagine the locals are so shell-shocked after decades of extreme fuckedness they probably can't distinguish between shit n' shinola us being there for a couple months was hardly a game changer Quote
G-spotter Posted March 17, 2010 Posted March 17, 2010 What was Somalia like after US occupation in 1993? A lot like Montana Was the genocide (or whatever its officially referred to as nowadays) over, slowed, or about the same? You have it confused with Rwanda. the problem with Somalia in 1993 was a shortage of khat. Who was in power? The Kazakh Mafiya were running the show. Were the people happy in general? Would you be happy if the drug you use daily was in short supply? How do you think it would have been if the US would not have intervened? Black Hawk Down would have been called Black Cock Up This is for an essay I'm writing btw... Thanks I think you just failed. Quote

Not terribly long and a quick but compelling read. Quote
kroc Posted March 17, 2010 Posted March 17, 2010 Not much of an occupation. Sounds like more of a police action. About 25,000 US troops were in Somalia, compare that with almost 250,000 to start the Iraq war... Quote
