powdrx Posted February 5, 2010 Posted February 5, 2010 I'm jonezing for some granite... any local thoughts on dry rock come Sunday?? That or I'll be on another search for freshiez!! Thanks!! Quote
kurthicks Posted February 5, 2010 Posted February 5, 2010 not looking good at the moment, but we'll see. It's sunny right now, but has been raining off and on for a few days and is snowy up high. I'd think index is a better bet. Quote
powdrx Posted February 5, 2010 Author Posted February 5, 2010 Thanks for the info. Hard to imagine much of Index is dry right now, but with all the El Nino "magic" out there it just might be true! Quote
rocketparrotlet Posted February 5, 2010 Posted February 5, 2010 Index in condition? How quickly does the GNS/Lower Wall dry up after rain? -Mark Quote
kurthicks Posted February 6, 2010 Posted February 6, 2010 I just did a quick canyon tour. If it rains tonight/tomorrow this will all change, of course. Tumwater --February Buttress area looked ok --Upper Castle has some dry lines from the look of it Icicle --Mountie Dome dry --Careno Area looked ok --Givler's Crack looked mostly dry --Heart of Gold area may be ok. ryanb Posted February 6, 2010 Posted February 6, 2010 How did the boulders look in leavenworth? GNS gets sun at the end of the day and I recall the first little pitch of aires having water running down them on one night time early season ascent...it is possible to get to the mid slab anchors avoiding pretty much every crux and then top rope stuff from there if you don't want to lead at your limit in damp conditions. Stuff in the country tends to get sun earlier in the day but I find the scramble to the first anchor on gm can be sketch if wet. Quote
kurthicks Posted February 6, 2010 Posted February 6, 2010 Boulders: some snow on the tops, depending on where they are. snowy and muddy landings, but those in dense trees might have bare ground around the bases. The best bets are near the mouth of each canyon. oh yea, the Sam Hill area looked pretty ok too. Quote
powdrx Posted February 6, 2010 Author Posted February 6, 2010 Thanks for the heads up Kurt. That is a good start... we might check out Clem's Holler and the Javelin area as they get a lot of sun. Weather today is great and tomorrow looks good too (for rock, not powder snow, which is what I would usually be looking for this time of year)!! Quote
rocketparrotlet Posted February 7, 2010 Posted February 7, 2010 How are Darrington and Index looking now? -Mark Quote
genepires Posted February 7, 2010 Posted February 7, 2010 crazy that we are asking about darrington in february! And the answer me be a good one. 1st winter ascent of total soul or silent running? Quote
Crillz Posted February 8, 2010 Posted February 8, 2010 Index was pretty good on Saturday. It was pretty surprising to find most of the routes dry (at least the ones I looked at). There were a lot of cars in the LTW parking lot, but didn't see too many peeps at the LTW. Quote
powdrx Posted February 8, 2010 Author Posted February 8, 2010 With all the rain on Saturday night, ended up over in Vantage. It was wet and rainy until about 10miles from the River and then it was dry. We climbed in the clouds for about 90min, then had 2hrs of shirts of cragging in the sun before the clouds cooled it back off. Fun to get a little Feb cragging in!! Quote
Off_White Posted February 8, 2010 Posted February 8, 2010 crazy that we are asking about darrington in february! And the answer me be a good one. 1st winter ascent of total soul or silent running? Well, the first five pitches may not really count as 1st winter ascent, but it's sort of already happened! TR Quote
