turn_one Posted November 3, 2009 Posted November 3, 2009 Will be down there for 2 weeks in November. Looking to get away from the standard dustbowl campsites. Suggestions appreciated. Quote
shapp Posted November 3, 2009 Posted November 3, 2009 Bonnie Springs, Steven knows the old bar wench that gives free drinks, please give her and extra $20 for me due to my drunken failure to properly compensate her last time around. Quote
Matt_Alford Posted November 3, 2009 Posted November 3, 2009 I have always camped out at Lovell Canyon about 20 minutes W of Red Rocks. It's free, but always interesting out there. You kind of get the feeling that bodies are buried in shallow graves all around. I say it still beats the RR Camp Ground which is the Biggest Suck about climbing at RR. Quote
pdk Posted November 3, 2009 Posted November 3, 2009 So what are the beefs with the RR campground? Other than the nazi-camground host - GIVE ME THE MONEY! - I've never had any problems with it. Quote
eldiente Posted November 3, 2009 Posted November 3, 2009 Dusty, expensive, no shade, loud, no water. Basically it sucks. Quote
pdk Posted November 3, 2009 Posted November 3, 2009 Dusty and no shade - I'd attribute those to the fact that it's in the desert. Not much they could do about those two. They do now have running water, which is a nice change from the old military tank of hot, foul water they used to have. $10/night is middle of the road for camping prices. Showers would be great. mountainsloth Posted November 3, 2009 Posted November 3, 2009 tell the rangers you are going to be on a route for a couple days and have to spend the night on the wall... do this every night. Quote
jhamaker Posted November 4, 2009 Posted November 4, 2009 Head out past Bonnie Springs, rt at the gass station towards Barstow, first valley on the left, follow powerline rd. Check map for land manager (BLM, FS . . . ) Come visit us in my camo tent at Little Afganistan "where the action is." Quote
Crack Posted November 4, 2009 Posted November 4, 2009 Everytime I've been to that campground a really nice elderly couple are running the show -but it's been quite a while now...I would second the suggestion of a cheap motel; last year we surfed online for some deal that had us staying in the Sahara for less than $20 a night! I'd still bring a sleeping bag though, as it is a room with two beds for less than $20 a night... Quote
BrianB2 Posted November 4, 2009 Posted November 4, 2009 Vegas.com the day before you want to book. Can usually get rooms in decent hotels for 20 bucks or even less. Quote
Off_White Posted November 4, 2009 Posted November 4, 2009 Stay out climbing until dark every day, then its no big deal. I've only stayed at the group camp though, it's up the hill to the east, furthest site was just fine. Quote
jhamaker Posted November 5, 2009 Posted November 5, 2009 Official camping regs, from the BLM: http://www.blm.gov/nv/st/en/fo/lvfo/blm_programs/lvfo_recreation/camping.html Quote
