JoshK Posted June 5, 2008 Posted June 5, 2008 Oh wait, no, it's just June. 4k freezing levels and accumulation? WTF? Who is skiing and where? I know somebody must be!!! -josh Quote
EastCoastBastard Posted June 7, 2008 Posted June 7, 2008 It is! In NZ. The Remarkables ski area opened last week, found some good snow on Ruapehu last month. Snowed 30cm last saturday in Nelson lakes. Too bad school gets in the way of skiing. Quote
XXX Posted June 7, 2008 Posted June 7, 2008 Ya this late season snow is rather impressive, 10 inches at paradise yesterday, another 10 inches today? 2 feet above 5k. Another cool troph pegged to come in next weekend perhaps. I am curious what you guys think of this year compared to 99? This summer so far has been rather chilly. I started climbing in 1999 during highschool and I remeber going out that summer and seeing snow at the 4K level on the ground in July. Quote
Maine-iac Posted June 7, 2008 Posted June 7, 2008 Nothing is better than face shots in June, well maybe July. Quote
ivan Posted June 8, 2008 Posted June 8, 2008 This summer so far has been rather chilly. hate to be an occultist, but summer don't start for 2 more weeks still, jefe. Quote
ivan Posted June 8, 2008 Posted June 8, 2008 Summer starts on July 14th in the NW. how ya figure? b/c of the all the semi-retard french-types who settled out here and needed to merge the solstice w/ bastille day? Quote
AlpineK Posted June 8, 2008 Posted June 8, 2008 Look at the NW history records. Just because june 20th is the solstice doesn't mean summer starts here then. Quote
Gary_Yngve Posted June 8, 2008 Posted June 8, 2008 A few years ago I was blizzarded off of Daniel on the summer solstice. The previous year, I believe, we encountered snow on the 4th of July. I think Wayne Wallace bailed from a day into the Ptarmigan Traverse that weekend. Last year seemed unusual in that the weather around July 4th was exceptional, whereas many of the weekends after then were crappy. Quote
Dechristo Posted June 9, 2008 Posted June 9, 2008 T'was the last day of the lift service season at Arapaho Basin yesterday. 245 days, one day shy of the record. Quote
XXX Posted June 9, 2008 Posted June 9, 2008 The snow level will be around 4,000 ft. today and then drop to 2,500 ft. by midnight and up 12" is expected. Because of this, a Heavy Snow Warning has been issued from 6 p.m. This evening until 8 a.m. Tuesday for the West slopes of the North and Central Cascades, this includes all of the passes. Quote
JoshK Posted June 9, 2008 Author Posted June 9, 2008 A-Basin...bah... Yeah, they stay open late with a north facing bowl tucked up on the continental divide. Yesterday in the Teanaway we were skiing a full snow pack in one of the driest and quickest to melt out areas in the Cascades. PNW ftw, CO ftl!! Oh yeah, yesterday's turns ROCKED!!! Quote
plexus Posted June 9, 2008 Posted June 9, 2008 A-Basin had two inches of new for its last day on Sunday. I saw about 6 people carrying their skis up the Dead Dog Couloir on Torreys Peak on Saturday. Quote
Maine-iac Posted June 9, 2008 Posted June 9, 2008 Skiing is in on Hood http://www.backcountrymagazine.com/ p.s. Im glad everybody decided not to summit yesterday, it made for a lovely empty summit, and we didn't have to worry about anybody getting in the way for our descent. Quote
JoshK Posted June 9, 2008 Author Posted June 9, 2008 (edited) Ahh Torreys. Such memories of the staggeringly boring Sawatch range. That long coulior on Mt. of the Holy Cross always looked cool. I found other random couloir that were fun too, but everything not a coulior would always melt out so early. P.S. That picture of Hood looks fuggin' glorious. Long live the PNW. AlpineK Posted June 9, 2008 Posted June 9, 2008 I've had some really fun days skiing at A Basin and on some of the surrounding slopes accessed from Loveland Pass, but I'll take the PNW way before Colorado. I never made it to Silverton though Quote
skykilo Posted June 9, 2008 Posted June 9, 2008 p.s. Im glad everybody decided not to summit yesterday, it made for a lovely empty summit, and we didn't have to worry about anybody getting in the way for our descent. We also hit the summit, slightly later in the day, with lots more adventure on the way. Quote
Maine-iac Posted June 10, 2008 Posted June 10, 2008 Skykilo, what time were you up there? I was part of the 3 skiers who skied the Mazamma chute (the photo on backcountry mag is of me), we reached the summit at 945am. Quote

And yes, from a mountaineering perspective, a lot of the stuff here is boring. But you make do with what you gots. Tried downloading pics of the skiers on Torreys but the system didn't like me. You can view them by following the link to my sig. Quote

So that was you that we saw skiing down. We hit the summit at 6:45. There was a guided group telling people not to go up because avalanche danger was too high....that's why the summit was empty.
