mattp
Oh and Jim...any chance you can show me where Obama demonstrated a new bipartisan way of governing, sponsored a significant piece of legislation or showed leadership during his time in the Senate? That's completely out of bounds. You mean a candidate for President has to be able to show some past success at leadership? Are you next going to suggest that COMPETENCY counts? For an oppressive amount of time, Obama's been in the lead of a gignormous media circus. It's irrefutable.
Doug
WTF? My comments aren't specific to any candidate. It appears that Matt suggested that a candidate did not have to have shown any past success at leadership. I'm asking if that was a serious statement. One of the criteria for any candidate getting my support is a proven record of leadership.
mattp
Doug, I was being facetious, but only sort of. Think about it: what had GW really done so well before he became president? (Hint don't look up his oil company or ball team). And the second time? We already knew he was a failure in so many important ways. And How ‘bout Bill Clinton? Was he a fantastic governor in Arkansas? I don’t remember anything about that but he was promising to bring a new age to Washington. Was he reelected because he sent troops to Mogadishu? Is how you weigh Hillary or Obama or McCain really based on some objective scorecard of what they’ve accomplished? If so, you are in a distinct minority. Doug
Matt, the way I see it each candidate has been in leadership or figurehead situations for many years. They normally don't get to where they are without that. Sure, they all get boosts from the party they align themselves with, I just like to see how they've handled it once they got there. Some would argue that Hilary got to where she is on Bill's coat tails; Obama has seemed to ascend on his terms, as has McCain. The current idiot in chief has been placed in positions of power mainly due to family connections. Even that isn't necessarily a bad thing; so long as the person doesn't royally fuck up.
