Captain Crunch
I'm looking for a good rappel device for use with an 11mm static rope (static = stiffer). My ATC works, but is really slow. I've heard that fig-8's twist the rope all up. Any ideas? B-52?

godskid5
ive used the 8 without much problem
catbirdseat
They used to use an 11 mm semi-static arborist's rope at Stone Gardens. The Trango Pyramid and the B-52 worked the best.
builder206
I switched from an ATC to a B52 specifically because the ATC is so slow on rappel (at the top anyway). The B52 definitely is faster in that realm. I have no experience using it on static ropes, however.
mike1
Cavers typically use rescue eights, brake racks like kurthicks shows, or devices like Petzl’s Simple or Stop descenders for their static rope systems.
mountainmandoug
I've mostly used carabiner brakes on thick static ropes, and it works fairly well and it's cheap. Break racks are great, although you usually only use about three bars. Figure eights work ok but they do twist the rope and in lots of situations that's a problem. G-spotter
so rap with the dull side
Captain Crunch
Brake racks are too heavy for my purpose. It would be highly advantagous to be able to belay with this device too. (on a dynamic rope ofcourse). Mayby I'll try out the Bee fity two
builder206
Worn down Reverso. If it's a Reverso and it's worn, do you go up, then?
ketch
Brake racks are too heavy for my purpose. This makes little sense. What exactly are you doing. It seems to me that anyone that is using a 11mm static line is not too concerned about weight to start with.

mike1
zacly! Would you concider that worn out?
spotly
I wouldn't let someone belay me on it, that's fer sure. Might as well use a Ginsu.
hafilax
I read somewhere that someone did some tests on the sharp reverso and found that it took a lot of force to cause sheath damage and that the metal folded before cutting. A quick search turned up the article below. Reverso review referencing sharp edge tests. I guess the sharp edge rumors are affecting sales because they've redesigned it to be very similar to the ATC-Guide only with the anchor loop rotated. Off_White
Biner brake. Probably too retro for your purposes, but it's a great tool everyone should know (ditto for the hip belay)
