Use brown rice syrup.

Get it at the health food stores, next to molasses.

It's the #1 ingredient in Clif shots and Clif bars.

WAY cheaper than the Gu packs, and almost the same stuff.

I snarf it out of an squeeze bottle on all my alpine climbs. Works great!
