knotzen Posted June 19, 2007 Posted June 19, 2007 (edited) And there are plenty of people out there who specialize in just this form of therapy. I know that. But they are rarely used for eating disorders like obsessive eating. They need to be. Are you telling me that in America, where the diet industry is multi multi multi millions of dollars, shrinks haven't decided that charging a hundred bucks an hour to talk to fat people might be a good idea? Largely (ha), that be it, man. I'm not saying they aren't out there, but look through a list of psychologists and psychiatrists, and a small percentage will include eating disorders as an area of specialty, and I bet few would include "obsessive eating" as an eating disorder. Typically that refers to anorexia or bulimia. My opinion and experience. YMMV. Anyway, movin' on. Carry on, then, mates. Edited June 19, 2007 by knotzen Quote

archenemy Posted June 19, 2007 Posted June 19, 2007 Obsessive behavior is obsession behavior. As you yourself said, when a person stops one "addictive" behavior they often go to another. So you do not go to a shrink to get your "addictive food behavior" cured, you go to get some control over obsessive behavior itself. Quote

SmallShoes Posted June 19, 2007 Posted June 19, 2007 So you do not go to a shrink to get your "addictive food behavior" cured, you go to get some control over obsessive behavior itself. Just a thought: Many who overeat compulsively may not recognize or realize that they themselves are exhibiting an obsessive/compulsive behavior. Or they may start obsessing about the only way they can think of treating their obesity - dieting. Perhaps pointing out this psychological aspect to some of these people would help with getting them to see someone who can help them. Quote
Cobra_Commander Posted June 19, 2007 Posted June 19, 2007 I diet with GoLean Crunch. Not only does it taste awesome and grinds down my teeth, it provides guaranteed explosive gas in 3 hours time with the precision of a Swiss train. The resulting hay bale produced is so dense it has to be hand-lowered into the can to avoid backsplash. A minor inconvenience. Quote

The point could be made that living in this society not only makes it easy but actually encourages overeating (think huge portions etc.) because the food industry is spending multi multi multi millions of dollars. These shrinks have their work cut out for them. It's hard to limit yourself in country where it's so easy not to. That and the fact that these people have to actually go to a shrink to be helped whereas they just have to be watching TV to be encouraged to overeat. Quote

selkirk Posted June 19, 2007 Posted June 19, 2007 Climbing is an addictive obsessive, dangerous, expensive, behavior. Of course no shrink would try to treat climbers. We'd much rather spend money on shiny new cams, and ballnuts Quote
