Tom_Sjolseth Posted May 6, 2007 Posted May 6, 2007 (edited) I just got back from a failed "attempt" on the Leuthold's Couloir, Sunday AM. Winds were atrocious! I would estimate they were 40MPH sustained at the top of the lifts at 5AM, and 60MPH sustained at 9500' with gusts to 80MPH (no shit). Not to mention the complete whiteout and driving ice pellets up high. The ambient air temperature was above freezing until about 8500', but the wind made it feel like it was in the teens. We went to plan B, thinking we could manage the punter route, but with the winds and whiteout, we bagged that too. Crazy weather on Hood Sunday. EDIT: just found some telemetry data which confirms my estimations at the top of the lifts. http://www.nwac.us/~nwac/products/OSOTIM 5-6-2007 Northwest Weather and Avalanche Center Top of The Magic Mile chair, Timberline, Oregon 7000 ft wind not heating and may be rimed MM/DD Hour Temp Wind Wind Wind Wind PST F Min Avg Max Dir 7000' 7000' 7000' 7000' 7000' ------------------------------------------ 5 5 1500 41 11 18 23 333 5 5 1600 36 15 24 32 333 5 5 1700 39 16 26 34 340 5 5 1800 38 18 25 35 339 5 5 1900 37 19 26 35 340 5 5 2000 38 14 24 35 338 5 5 2100 40 21 29 41 341 5 5 2200 40 23 33 50 344 5 5 2300 39 23 31 41 347 5 6 0 39 24 34 43 345 5 6 100 39 27 36 44 341 5 6 200 41 26 37 45 342 5 6 300 41 22 31 43 350 5 6 400 40 26 36 47 349 5 6 500 41 27 34 43 347 5 6 600 41 21 31 44 339 5 6 700 42 23 33 45 338 5 6 800 43 20 31 42 336 5 6 900 45 19 27 40 332 5 6 1000 46 17 26 36 338 5 6 1100 48 18 26 36 336 5 6 1200 48 18 25 40 330 5 6 1300 47 14 22 31 331 5 6 1400 45 11 20 28 331 Edited May 7, 2007 by Tom_Sjolseth Quote
ptavv Posted May 6, 2007 Posted May 6, 2007 I was up on Wy'east yesterday (Saturday) and it was quite nice until some clouds rolled in around 10:45ish. Which was when the snow was nice and corned up for the ski down anyway. Quote
ryland_moore Posted May 7, 2007 Posted May 7, 2007 It was a huge lenticular camped out over Hood all day yesterday and one forming up over Adams. I took some pics but the fiance has the camera. As soon as I can get them I'll post it up. Did not look good to be up there yesterday afternoon and it told me to cancel any idea of heading up today. Sorry you were caught out in it.... Quote
Rat_In_Training Posted May 7, 2007 Posted May 7, 2007 I was up yesterday (Saturday), and I can tell you it was clear and sunny at 2:45pm when I topped out. I have the bad sunburn to prove it..... Conditions were high cloud cover and occasional winds earlier in the day.... What time did the cloud form up?? Quote
wayne Posted May 7, 2007 Posted May 7, 2007 Told you so, Layton, now arent you glad we did Graybeard instead? I dont want attempt # 16 to have to happen. Quote
ryland_moore Posted May 7, 2007 Posted May 7, 2007 I was driving out to Hood River at 4:30 and the lenticular was in perfect form. The lenticular over Adams was less formed but was starting to. I will post a pic soon. Quote
Frikadeller Posted May 7, 2007 Posted May 7, 2007 I was driving out to Hood River at 4:30 and the lenticular was in perfect form. The lenticular over Adams was less formed but was starting to. I will post a pic soon. Was this on Saturday? I skinned up to illumination saddle on saturday, and around 4 ish the clouds begain rolling in, so I put the split board back together, and jammed back to timberline... The wind was getting bad too, but I cought the lenticular cloud on adams as I drove toward Hood River from Hood.... It was pretty neat seeing the cloud roll in on you while riding away from it!! Haha.. Quote
billbob Posted May 7, 2007 Posted May 7, 2007 Ya, Went up SS Sat, pitched camp at 10K just E of Crater Rock. Heard the wind screaming below until about 6am. The chutes were plugged w/ thigh-deep slush over ice. Long walk back. Quote
ivan Posted May 7, 2007 Posted May 7, 2007 Told you so, Layton, now arent you glad we did Graybeard instead? I dont want attempt # 16 to have to happen. he was probably just trying to avoid putting 200k miles on his new car in it's first year Quote
eldiente Posted May 7, 2007 Posted May 7, 2007 Anyone seen the west side of Hood in the last few weeks? Going up there this weekend (12th) and am wondering how the hike up and ski down is going to be. Quote
Frikadeller Posted May 8, 2007 Posted May 8, 2007 Long walk back. Heh, Thats why I bring the split board. No post holing down below, and it only takes me less that 25min to get from Crater rock back to the parking lot... With no effort I might add, and usually is a screaming good time as well!! Quote

Going up there this weekend (12th) and am wondering how the hike up and ski down is going to be. I can only vouch for the south west side... Windpack and slush below, more windpack, with some rime above lifts, and ice, crud and crust from I-rock. YMMV dependinng on what happens this week... Edited May 8, 2007 by Frikadeller Quote

Literally Knock-you-on-your-ass wind. Lost my mitt up there, blew right off my hand. If anyone finds an REI Switchback mitt somewhere PM me! Quote
