Peter_Puget Posted February 28, 2007 Posted February 28, 2007 Note: This is a daycare/aftercare facility The students had been building an elaborate "Legotown," but it was accidentally demolished. The teachers decided its destruction was an opportunity to explore "the inequities of private ownership." According to the teachers, "Our intention was to promote a contrasting set of values: collectivity, collaboration, resource-sharing, and full democratic participation." The children were allegedly incorporating into Legotown "their assumptions about ownership and the social power it conveys." These assumptions "mirrored those of a class-based, capitalist society -- a society that we teachers believe to be unjust and oppressive." They claimed as their role shaping the children's "social and political understandings of ownership and economic equity ... from a perspective of social justice." So they first explored with the children the issue of ownership. Not all of the students shared the teachers' anathema to private property ownership. "If I buy it, I own it," one child is quoted saying. The teachers then explored with the students concepts of fairness, equity, power, and other issues over a period of several months. At the end of that time, Legos returned to the classroom after the children agreed to several guiding principles framed by the teachers, including that "All structures are public structures" and "All structures will be standard sizes." The teachers quote the children: "A house is good because it is a community house." "We should have equal houses. They should be standard sizes." "It's important to have the same amount of power as other people over your building." I bet Jim loves this school! A deep and heavy journal Quote

archenemy Posted February 28, 2007 Posted February 28, 2007 I love legos. Isn't it funny that the teachers had to use a top-down approach to teach this "fairness". Easy to do so when you are the one with the power. Quote

foraker Posted February 28, 2007 Posted February 28, 2007 (edited) Weird. It's a private day care so that's even more ironic.... Maybe they're just trying to develop a little Spartan day care complex and the next step is to have little fighting pits with little tiny spears and axes and stuff. That'd be SO cute! Plagiarism is wrong too Edited February 28, 2007 by foraker Quote
minx Posted February 28, 2007 Posted February 28, 2007 UGGGH! theres a difference between democracy and socialism. Quote
tvashtarkatena Posted February 28, 2007 Posted February 28, 2007 I used to love building things with Legos with my younger brother. If I needed a piece I didn't have, I'd just snap it off of what he was building and watch him cry. Quote

tvashtarkatena Posted February 28, 2007 Posted February 28, 2007 Uhmmm...I was pre-funny Lego people. They'd just invented the little round pieces when I came on the scene. Prior to that, I used to have to build square rockets. Quote

I am glad you consider such teaching wrong however I also doubnt that you really thought I was making an effort to claim that as my writing. Anyone else notice a pattern - The two "liberal" sprayers on this thread both post attacks against a person..... Quote

archenemy Posted February 28, 2007 Posted February 28, 2007 I am pretty sure the lego people came out shortly after the round lego peices. Maybe there is a lego timeline somewhere? Quote

Jim Posted February 28, 2007 Posted February 28, 2007 I don't get it. Why is PP and the Heartland Institue (article PP cut and paste from) getting their panties in a bunch? Isn't this a private institution offering something that some parents want? Isn't this how the free market works? Oh the humanity! Quote

Anyone else notice a pattern - The two "liberal" sprayers on this thread both post attacks against a person..... Dear Mr. Hypersensitive. Perhaps you need an ego enema. I doubt very much the author of the piece you cut-and-pasted cares that you got 2-out-of-3 links correct. Considering the person who wrote it is also a lawyer, you might want to think about that. By providing a proper reference for your little brain fart, I perhaps covered your ass for you. You should be thanking me, you pustulant ingrate. Quote
Peter_Puget Posted February 28, 2007 Author Posted February 28, 2007 Now Jim are my panties really in a bunch? I didn't even comment other than the topic title. The thrid liberal guy and yet another personal attack ....a pattern is forming. By the way still waiting for your reply regarding the page three article in the Seattle Times. Quote
