marylou Posted February 24, 2006 Posted February 24, 2006 I've been wearing a neoprene one off and one for years and suddenly my skin doesn't like neoprene any more. Anyone know what else is out there that's reasonably supportive? I liked the neo because it's simple, cheap, and grabs the front side of the subtalar joint and holds it still, which is what I'm looking for. No spray please. The reaction from the neoprene has been bad enough, thank you. Quote
catbirdseat Posted February 24, 2006 Posted February 24, 2006 Perhaps you can get by without them now. Have you tried it? If you did special exercises to strengthen the muscles then you wouldn't need the braces. Quote
layton Posted February 24, 2006 Posted February 24, 2006 Marylou, there are soft ankle braces made out of cloth with laces and posterior and or lateral stabilizers. just search the net. kinesiotape is a great alternative to provide proprioceptive feedback without being constrictive. downsides are price, constant re-taping, and irritation from the adhesive, but they stay on for a week. you can also put some pre-wrap on your ankle, do a good tape job, and cut it off, re-applying tape on the outside each time you use it. layton Posted February 24, 2006 Posted February 24, 2006 to slow the progression Ca,Mg,VitC,Glucosame/Chondroitin Sulfate w/MSM Movement to increase nutrition of cartilage: wobble boards, chiropractic adjustments. and.....cold laser. seriously. cold laser. try it. Quote
crackers Posted February 24, 2006 Posted February 24, 2006 Any lit on wobble boards? I live with one of the worst ankles in the USA--you can check out the photo here. Not an allograft candidate right now, the joints are too screwed up, but we're hoping that she can do an external radial fixator to regrow the ankle. MaryLou you should try Symtech liquid gluc/chon/msm. It works far better for my fiance than anything else ever has. Also, a good medical supply company should have a blue kind of ankle brace that's not neoprene. I'll see if i can find out the name. Quote

JayB Posted February 24, 2006 Posted February 24, 2006 If you are not at peanut-allergy level sensitivity, there's a bunch of neoprene braces that are lined with fabric that may help with the reaction. I used a brace with a "thermoskin" liner to stabilize my thumb after I sprained it a few weeks ago, and it's been pretty comfortable. Quote
Stefan Posted February 24, 2006 Posted February 24, 2006 I don't know of any other choices but those cottony elastic ones. Quote
