Ambergris is essentially cholesterol, or closely related to it. There are synthetic or semi-synthetic alternatives now for perfume fixatives. I always wondered what they meant by the term "fixative", so I looked it up. Perfumes are mixtures of compounds, some volatile and others less volatile. Fixatives are waxy or oily substances that dissolve the more volatile components and prevent them from evaporating too rapidly from the skin. Without fixative your expensive perfume would only last minutes.

but, you wouldn't get the effect of male arousal and female jealousy without the subliminal olfactory detection of fish guts.

Another "natural" fixative used for cosmetics is the waxy scum that rises to the top of aeration ponds in sewage treatment plants. Think about that next time you are putting on your lipstick (or kissing your lipsticked girl/boyfriend)

When I once worked for a fast food multinational, the grease we skimmed off the grill and from the chip vats would go into 50 gallon drums which were then sent off to cosmetics companies. Short path from McDonalds to lipstick blush.gif

BTW isn't ambergris mostly formed around giant squid beaks in the whale stomach? they are too big to shit out so the whale has to regurgiate them.cool.gif
