Jedi Posted January 6, 2006 Posted January 6, 2006 I have been using Patagonia's Salopette pants (soft shell type) for a while and I love them. Very versatile. Wind resistant (but I have not used in brutal winds). Dry quickly. Suspenders. High waist. Pocket on the thigh. Warm (R2 insulation down to the knees and then R1). They have a little stretch. Breathable, so they don't wet out. The problem: Lack of zipper though the crotch. The Patagonia Dimension pant is probably very close to the same pant without the r2/R1 insulation. Anyone know of a similar pant but lighter? Or just a great pant. Anyone have experience with the Arc'teryx Gamma Salopette? Thanks, Jedi Quote
JackY Posted January 6, 2006 Posted January 6, 2006 I like the Mammut champ pant, the zipper is the greatest f*&^%ing thing since sliced bread when wearing a harness. If I need any insulation I just wear fleece tights underneath. Quote

I bought them about 4 years ago. They don't make them anymore. They matched the jacket the preceeded the Mixmaster jacket. I found the matching jacket to be too warm but for the coldest of conditions. I plan to use them for my next trip to AK and possibly ice climbing. Quote

Lined with an integrated powder cuff, on the coldest days, I'll put longjohns on , but they do a great job on either full alpine conditions or a day a chair assisted turns. Quote
dbb Posted January 7, 2006 Posted January 7, 2006 I really like the arcterryx gamma LT pants. they are a tweave faric which is like a more robust schoeller dryskin dynamic. They may be lighter warmth wise than you were looking for, but they would be more versitle. just fit them so you can wear long underwear under them. These are the only pants I took to the canadian rockies this year for ice, and they were great. I like them much more than my old mec schoeller pants... the fit is awesome. Quote

Had to stuff a pair of gloves into them to keep my friend from freezing.. I know 45 mph wind isn't the standard but... It is my pee pee peeve. If you decide to go with these I will say that the standard length is a bit long. I do believe they make a short version which I wish I had purchased. I'm thinking about having my altered to fit a bit better. Other than that little bit of problem.. I love them.. Warm enough for most stuff and they move well. Quote

Something that has lightweight fleece bonded to a nylon shell... hence your interest in the Gamma Salopette? Of can it just be stretch nylon with no fleece i.e. scholler fabric? I have a pair of gamma bibs... arcteryx only make them a year. They are basically bib versions of the Gamma Salopette. I also have gamma MX pants, gamma LT pants (old version), and gamma AR pants. I think the later two might be to cold for AK but that kinda depends on when you are going/what you plan to wear under/over them. What temps are you expecting in climbing in? Do you plan on wearing anything over the Salopette? Quote

Temps could be pretty cool. Liked the "light" weight of my Salopette pants I have now (27oz). This includes the insulation. Something like the Dimension (24/25oz). I just got a new catalog yesterday and I see they make a R.5 superfly tight (6oz) which has the bombay fly. I little bit heavier sytem and not as warm. Maybe (hopefully) not as bulky in the lower leg area as the pants I have. The Gamma Bibs sounds like a great. Too bad they not longer make it. Did they have the knee pads? I am looking at the Bozeman Mountain Works insulated pants (7/8oz) the coldest days. Quote

John Frieh Posted January 9, 2006 Posted January 9, 2006 I heard a nasty rumor that one of the lead clothing designers at Arc Teryx worked at MEC prior to going to the bird and many of the MEC pieces (including a pair of fleece softshell bibs that look exactly like my gamma bibs) are basically arc teryx with an MEC logo. Perhaps Dru can confirm? I will say the bibs are hella hot... they are polartech 100... I believe all the current arcteryx items sport a lighter version of fleece including the MX pant. I don't use mine that much but I also climb around here mostly and it just don't get that cold. They are the fucking end all hot shit pair of bibs one can buy. I think they still make the Gamma suit that is gamma sv jacket top softshell bottom if you are into full suits. Quote
Dru Posted January 9, 2006 Posted January 9, 2006 several of the designers at arcteryx used to work for mec but the arcteryx gear is the stuff they never got the design time to make at mec! that said the mec pamir jacket is a copy of the gamma sv albeit with a higher rate of seconds.... mec never made an exact copy of the gamma sv bib, they made the composite jacket and bibs which are imho, too warm to wear (high-loft fleece on the inside instead of ptec 100) and which are on clearance for $99 right now i think...
