In the late 19th century European climbing community, a climber's head was known as a "snaffle hammer". This was due to the fact that climbers would return from the mountains often with parts of congealed on their woolen hats.

One of the guys I climbed with this year sports this helmet:

A guy I climbed with a couple of years ago had

 

"This is Not a Step" on the top of his helmet

 

and had "This End Up" on the back.

 

At the moment i'm seriously considering

 

"Can't sleep. Clown's will eat me." for mine
