The rope, which can be cut and generally used like normal rope, has a display out the end that tells how much load it's carrying and even how frayed it is. It's expected to be on the shelves of Home Depot in about six months. -- Squid Labs: Suckers for Novelty Appears to be static line but could the tech be integrated into a climbing rope? It would seem that the obvious climbing rope application is "electronic pre-failure detection". One would have to incorporate a miniature powered recording device near one end that would not interfere with normal use. A display device could be plugged in to read the data off the chip at home. One might be able to use a rope somewhat longer before retirement if the guesswork were taken out. On the other hand the initial cost would be higher so it would probably be cheaper to replace a rope every two- to five years as most people do. Did you know that the reason it is hard to get 50m ropes these days is because there was a big fire at the 50m factory? Thankfully the 60m factory was spared, and those ropes are relatively easy to come by. As a side note, if you need a 50m rope, just buy a 60m, and cut 10m off...and...waaalaaawww!
