Greta Posted August 14, 2005 Posted August 14, 2005 The Good Rain is a decent read. As per one of Eagan's suggestions, I picked up a copy of Theodore Winthrop's The Canoe and the Saddle, the first ed. printed in 1863. Copies from the original publisher are a bit hard to come by, but Ive managed to collect another 1st and a 4th ed. Im looking out for others if anyone has a copy they dont want. Dont own any white satin gloves, so I havent read it yet. Anyone else? Quote
billcoe Posted August 15, 2005 Posted August 15, 2005 Mr E - I bought that very same book after reading "In a Sunburned Country" by Bill Bryson. Fantastic work on Austraila. The book, "In a Sunburned Country about Australia was 9.9 good on a scale of 10 IMO. The book a Short History ........well....I have found it not interesting to the point where I stopped reading it and walked away. 3 or 4 out of 10 ? Are you enjoying it quite a bit then? Did you read in a Sunburned Country as well? ps thanks Sobo! Quote
billcoe Posted August 15, 2005 Posted August 15, 2005 Side note to the bored, I'll talk slow so you all undestand: AMERICANS ECXESSIVE CONSUMPTION OF GAS IS LEADING TO TERROR ATTACKS BEING FUNDED VIA TEACHING HATRED OF YOU AND ALL THE THINGS YOU STAND FOR. YES YOU (THATS YOU AND ME) ARE HELPING TO FUND THIS VIA PETROLIUM USAGE AND WASTEFUL DRIVING HABITS AND GAS SUCKING SUVS. Driving less means we will be less likely to have to engage the bastards militarity. So the next time you see some poor bastard get his throat cut via video on Al's Jissum.com, check the mirror and reflect upon your personal fuel useage. I have a 15 year old boy I want to have around for a while. In an interesting twist: I see as of today that the former Director of the CIA and Regans former Undersecretarty of Defense both agree with that very sediment. Glad to see I'm not the only raving loony. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20050814/ap_o...2MwBHNlYwM3Mzg- "Nonetheless, plug-in hybrids are starting to get the backing of prominent hawks like former CIA director James Woolsey and Frank Gaffney, President Reagan's undersecretary of defense. They have joined Set America Free, a group that wants the government to spend $12 billion over four years on plug-in hybrids, alternative fuels and other measures to reduce foreign oil dependence. Gaffney, who heads the Washington, D.C.-based Center for Security Policy, said Americans would embrace plug-ins if they understood arguments from him and others who say gasoline contributes to oil-rich Middle Eastern governments that support terrorism. "The more we are consuming oil that either comes from places that are bent on our destruction or helping those who are ... the more we are enabling those who are trying to kill us," Gaffney said. foraker Posted August 15, 2005 Posted August 15, 2005 If you are into Australian history, read "The Fatal Shore" by Robert Hughes. I lived down in Oz for 3 years and this book made me realize why they are they way they are. Quote
cj001f Posted August 15, 2005 Posted August 15, 2005 why they are they way they are. I'd always assumed it was a century of the, or one of the top, per capita incomes in the world. For those interested in oil "The Prize" - Daniel Yergin, gives a great history up to GW1 of the oil business, with such interesting sidenotes as Aristotle Onassis's whale foreskin bar stools. Quote
ivan Posted August 15, 2005 Posted August 15, 2005 "the washing of the spears" is currently playing a nice counterpoint to "one flew over the cockoos's nest" Quote

foraker Posted August 15, 2005 Posted August 15, 2005 let's not forget the unofficial 'white australia' policy that existed until the 70's.... Quote
