Dru Posted March 20, 2005 Posted March 20, 2005 There's an incredibly high rate of burnout when you are a child prodigy and realize that 99% of the world are idiots. A good friend of mine from elementary school who was completing university level math courses in elementary school, has been living on the streets since 1989. Instead of killing himself like this guy he took continuous megadoses of hallucinogens. Being smart is not always a survival trait if it leaves you maladapted to a dumb world. Quote
catbirdseat Posted March 20, 2005 Author Posted March 20, 2005 Parents think they are doing the right thing by allowing their prodigy children tear through the equivalent of years of education in a short period of time. It seems to me that they should be held back and allowed to be kids. They should travel and meet people and try to let their social skills and bodies catch up with their minds. That story just struck me as being incredibly sad. Quote

Dru Posted March 20, 2005 Posted March 20, 2005 Ya I saw him last year, and he was refusing to live in housing, he was sleeping in Stanley Park at night. Quote

There's plenty to be said for developing some social skills, but really, you can only be so smart and still be able to interact with the rest of the world. If this kid was as well-adjusted as everyone in that story made him out to be, it was nothing short of a miracle. Quote

selkirk Posted March 24, 2005 Posted March 24, 2005 Minnesota article all you gun nuts sure are right. It's definitely people that kill other people. But guns sure do make it a hell of a lot easier to kill lots of them all at once. Quote
