SnowByrd Posted October 28, 2004 Posted October 28, 2004 This applies to the sissy easy downhill 'stay in the lodge and be warm' part of Hood...Timberline. Has anyone been up there this time of year? How is the snow? Is it worth it? The weather report lists showers...does it rain that high up or does that mean snow for them? I am thinking of taking my 10 year old up and neither of us are great skiiers and have never done any backcountry. So, this applies to the groomed runs etc... We're itching to go and were wondering if its worth the drive. Any beta would be helpful....and rude comments too, Dru We KNOW we're not REAL skiiers...we just wanna have fun and get the f*&^ outta dodge this weekend. Quote
cluck Posted October 28, 2004 Posted October 28, 2004 I'd say go for it. I was up there last weekend and the coverage was suprisingly good on the groomed stuff. The freezing level has been low enough this week that any precip would have been snow for them. They were only running one chair + the bunny hill though, so they weren't charging full price. We paid $32 a ticket. With the new snow, they may open more chairs and may raise the ticket price. Lastly - call their snow phone first to make sure they're open. They have a habit of deciding at the last minute not to open and it would suck to get up there to find the place shut down. It won't be the best skiing of the year, but will definitly scratch the itch! Quote
cj001f Posted October 28, 2004 Posted October 28, 2004 Timberline's a great place for intermediate skiier's and little one's. Current forecast looks like it'll be snowing up there all weekend. Depending on the weather they may not have much open. Quote
SnowByrd Posted October 28, 2004 Author Posted October 28, 2004 Thanks Guys! We've got room for a couple more in our car if anybody is interested...I'll call them tomorrow morning and post on whether its a go or not. Its so nice to live here in the PNW....theres so much to do Quote
iain Posted October 28, 2004 Posted October 28, 2004 Unfortunately, the most reliable snow up there is serviced by the Palmer chairlift. They are quite conservative with opening that chair as it is a major undertaking and visibility is frequently poor. They put it to bed for the winter once the snow really starts coming down. I'm not sure about coverage on the terrain served by the other lifts. If the Palmer and Mile are shut down due to weather, hmm. Quote
cluck Posted October 29, 2004 Posted October 29, 2004 Pucci was the only lift open last weekend and coverage on the runs was suprisingly decent. Stay on the runs, though - the off trail stuff will rip yer skis up. Quote
letsroll Posted October 29, 2004 Posted October 29, 2004 what about the coverage up higher? I was thinking about taking my board up to the summit. Quote
SnowByrd Posted October 29, 2004 Author Posted October 29, 2004 what about the coverage up higher? I was thinking about taking my board up to the summit. Okay...time to make some plans...rock or snow...rock or snow...checkin the weather report...lesseee here....stay tuned... Quote
dryad Posted October 29, 2004 Posted October 29, 2004 Let me know what you decide. I wanna get out and DO SOMETHING!!! ANYTHING!!!! AAAAARRRRGGGHHH!!!!!! Quote
SnowByrd Posted October 29, 2004 Author Posted October 29, 2004 Here's the dealio...its supposed ot be sunny but cold in Vantage...and its a 2 hour drive....theres our rock. The Palmer Snow Field is open at TImberline...and its snowing....but I don't know what the Palmer Snow Field is? Is it just one lift with a coupld of green runs? Is it several lifts with a mix of easy and difficult runs? Can anybody help here? Quote
SnowByrd Posted October 29, 2004 Author Posted October 29, 2004 I'm an idiot...please help me read a map Is the Palmer snow field that whole area? Is it below the lodge or above it? They need a better map of the trails. Quote
neversummer Posted October 29, 2004 Posted October 29, 2004 The palmer snowfield is the top lift with only "black" terrain leading down from it. I would say that this time of year it is NOT a good place for beginner skiers at all, the weather can be awful up there (whtie outs, fog and wind)and while its not all that steep it's a very long continuous 22 or so degree angle affording little rest/stopping oppourtunity for those still learning to ski. However if they are running pucci (lift G) then your good to go. Quote
SnowByrd Posted October 29, 2004 Author Posted October 29, 2004 To answer my own question....the UPPER stuff is open...and its all black diamond...which I cannot ski...yet. They're supposed to get a foot of snow this weekend....but that remains to be seen. So for plans...well...I'd say maybe next weekend for Hood if they open the lower stuff.... So Dryad...lets hit some rock. Do you fancy a trip to Vantage? We can stay overnight if your little heart desires...PM me dear and lets make some plans. If you still fancy freshiez....Im sure you have your choice of partners...I've got the 10 year old so we'll probably climb. Quote
Ricardo_Montalban Posted October 29, 2004 Posted October 29, 2004 rock is a good choice, snowbyrd. the palmer at t-line is really a blue run (imo), but the weather tonight and tomorrow will all but guarantee closed lifts. -skibowl is a great choice when the snow levels have been below 3K' Quote
